So I'm interested in using the ADHA-529 and Lemondrop hops from farmhouse brewing. I am an extract/partial mash brewer. I'm new to making my own recipes and I've made couple IPA recipes that have come out very well in my opinion. But I'm looking to make something around 5% abv. Using beersmith, Here is what I was thinking of brewing for a Pale Ale. Any input would be appreciated!
    Grains (partial mash):
3 lbs Pale Ale Malt 2-Row
    8 oz Munich Malt
    4 oz Honey Malt

Extract (adding in the last 20 minutes of the boil):
    3.3lbs Briess Liquid Pale Ale
1 lb Dry Malt Extract - Amber

    Hops Schedule:
    60 min - 0.25oz ADHA-529
    15 min - 0.5oz ADHA-529
    15 min - 0.5oz Lemondrop
    0 min - 0.5oz ADHA-529
    0 min - 0.5oz Lemondrop

    Dry Hop
    1oz Lemondrop for 7 days
    1oz ADHA-529 for 7 days

    Yeast-
    Safale US-05

I want to make it a pale ale and according to beersmith, this is 45 IBUs so thats the high side of a pale ale. Any input would be appreciated.

I think you need more hops. Lemon Drop has been pretty pronounced for me, but you only have 2.25 oz of hops in the kettle, for a 5 gallon batch...?

Don't get hung up on the IBUs, after 20 min the IBU# doesn't come across as bitter as the number implies. I would add .5oz of each @ 10, and @ 5.

How many IBUs are you getting with that 60 min addition?

I have 4oz of adha-529 in the freezer. Looking forward to trying it. Most likely will pair it with Wakatu.

The recipe will be something like:

    2oz adha-529 in the kettle
    3oz Wakatu in the kettle

    2oz adha-529 dry hop
    1oz Wakatu dry hop

ADHA-529 is supposed to have lemon and coconut and you want to pair it with another lemon hop? Lemon Drop has a lot of lemon. Using something other than Lemon Drop would give you a better idea of what 529 brings to the glass.

I have 4 ounces of each hops. Im trying to keep it as a pale ale. Do you think I should get rid of the bittering hops? I'd like something around 40IBUs.

I wasn't sure if pairing them together would maximize the lemon flavor while adding a hint of coconut.

Since you've got 4oz of each, why not just bitter with something neutral and nix either lemondrop or adha-529. Rebrew it down the road using the other hop, and then you'll have a better idea of each hop.

I don't have any experience with the 529, so I can't really comment. But like I said, IBU# in and of themselves aren't necessarily helpful. If you bitter to 40IBU, but all of your additions are after 20 min...it will drink differently than if the majority of those IBUs were before 30 min.

I don't know your personal tastes. If you want a bite of bitterness you'll be served by having a 60 min addition (maybe around 10-15 IBU). If you want smoother/less bitterness you can certainly remove the 60 min addition, and throw everything in after 20 min.

You can look at some of the description from my House Pale Ale recipe, where all of the hops are added after 10 min (all 7 ounces of them).

That's the best way to do it, personal taste plays a major role. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

Absolutely. I often solicit input for a recipe, but in the end, it's trial and error for what you personally prefer.

no need to be sorry! any input is appreciated! I think im still gonna stick with the grains I picked and the 2 hops but do all the hop additions in the last 20 minutes.. and if I like or dont like it, I'm still gonna try the other option.
