I had the XII and wasn't blown away by it. The mouthfeel was thin and it wasn't worth the price to me. I've passed up on future years since then.

I've had XVI and XVII, both are world class, but expensive, $25 for a 500 ml bottle. Worth it? Sounds expensive but when I am drinking it I am enjoying it so much that I don't remember or care how much I paid.

Lol at these comments. If it was super limited, brewery only release, 2pp people would be going ape shit.

It's expensive but it also stays on shelves so if you want it, you'll likely get one if it's sold in your area. Oh and it's really good. So if you WANT the beer the price is great. If you want to BUT it...well yeah kinda painful to buy. I pickup a bottle most years but I haven't put any in a cellar due to price.

Never had a BA Old Rasputin, would be nice to see it show up in GJ someday soon.

    Cheers!

There's a rye whiskey barrel variant this year.

Overall, I think the BA Old Raspy is very under appreciated. Not quite sure why...but it's just fine with me!

I have a XVII I bought about six months ago and a XVIII I bought yesterday. Can someone please tell me, is the XVII from 2014 - that obviously makes sense, just want to confirm. Thanks

That is correct. It is a yearly release so it is easy to tell what year is which.

Probably true, at least until people actually started trying it and realized it's rediculously overpriced and not that great

Question: Is "standard" Barrel Aged Old Rasputin (e.g. XVI, XVII) a "wheat whiskey" barrel aged beer? In other words, is Wheat Whiskey XVIII this year's version of the standard release? And "rye whiskey" is a variant? Or are they both considered variants? (i.e. Neither one is bourbon, which is what this beer has been in years' past.)

Another (stupid): I thought bourbon was made with corn, so I'm a bit puzzled by the reference to wheat whiskey. Hence, my question in the first place.

I can answer the second question. All bourbon is 51% or more corn in the mash. "Wheated" means they used wheat in a small proportion (10-30% usually) instead of rye.

Regular Bourbon = Corn, Rye and Barley
Wheated Bourbon = Corn, Wheat and Barley

Why is that? Is the rye barrel presence too overpowering?

This version appeals to my interests...

Thanks. That helps. I'm just trying to figure out which of these two versions is the "regular" Barrel Aged Old Rasputin. Your response suggests that it's the rye version, and not the wheat version that I would have expected.

Well per their FB there is also an Old Rasputin Bourbon Barrel-Aged XVIII which will be available in Oct only at their retail stores & taproom. I suspect this one is more their 'regular' BA version. The Rye & Wheat versions are the two being distro'd. So there are 3 in total this year it seems.
