Huh. Funny that they're not distroing the "main" one. I'd expect for it have been other way around--that these two variants would have been the "special releases."

Yeah good point. Maybe due to what barrels they were able to secure for this iteration? Not sure. Here are the labels for the three.

Not entirely sure to be honest. there is such a thing as wheat whiskey (51% or more wheat) and straight rye (51% or more rye). Neither of these are technically bourbon, but based on the labeling of the BA Raspy, it might be they don't have a regular bourbon version this time? It might come later?

Edit - just read the rest of the thread - looks like they did do a wheat and a rye version this year.

North Coast just confirmed on Facebook that the bourbon-barrel version will be brewery only this year. They didn't produce as much of the bourbon barrel-aged version this year due to the new variants. (They have nice social media presence, by the way.)

"The Bourbon Barrel-Aged Old Rasputin release is very limited and will be available ONLY at the North Coast Brewing Company Stores and Taproom mid-October!" This is a quote from North Coast Brewing website.

I'm down to try both the new variants. For the price, there are places that sit on it long enough to score.

Bought a rye barrel expression, first beer I've ever bought expressly for cellaring. Any thoughts on how many years to sit on it?

Where in Chicago did you find them at that price? I'd actually consider a purchase...unfortunately Binny's everywhere have them @ $21.99...

Yep, they definitely don't seem to be flying off the shelf...

I bought a couple of these as well last week...I think it was the rye version. What are people's thoughts on drinking this right away vs. sitting on it for a bit? My inclination is to drink one in the near future and save the other for 6-12 months.

Sounds about right. Always try one fresh and then decide.

If rye and wheat whiskey variants are anything like the bourbon barrel aged version (e.g. XVI, XVII), they'll be great to drink now. Cellaring them is an experiment, IMO, nothing more.

With Ba Narwhal and Ba old rasputin both being $20 plus a piece, its making the bourbon county price look great including what the variants prices might be. The two said beers are not even in the same realm IMO
