Ok, fellow BA'ers ---- how long do think a beer review needs to be in order to for you to feel the review gives you what you want to know? I know the site counts characters, not words, so those who favor multi-syllabic prose can really rack up the counts. There is a 150 character minimum, so that's a base. But do you really read 3,000+ character reviews?

I went with the 1,000 option. 1,000-1,200 seems to do the trick for me.

i've checked a few of my recent reviews and i'm between 300-1000. depends what i think of the beer. the more i like it the more i type. but for me it doesn't matter much. some people can say the same thing in 150 characters as one person can say in 2000 characters.

Nice point here. Really depends on who is writing it. Neither way is wrong per se, but some people have a knack for packing a lot of (quality) content into a small size.

I like to hear about the looks, aroma, taste, and feel. Any pertinent extra info is great.

I won't read long reviews, just want the skinny on the beer. Will read long forum posts if there is a good point to be made.

I used to write long, drawn out literature in my reviews. A silly name drop, where I bought it, what I was doing when I found it, the price, and what I expected from it.

I'd then go on to describe in full detail what I was sensing on all levels, and then the overall section was usually 5 paragraphs or more.

I've learned to shorten it and condense everything that's good, cut the fat, and tell ONLY what I'm seeing, smelling, tasting, and feeling. Overall impressions category is a new one, and that's kept to 3-5 sentences.

My reviews have gone from 1,500 character counts to easily 700-900. Much easier to read and not start snoring.

I would guess the ones I find most useful are in the 750 - 1500 character range.

My reviews are typically 500-700 words. I try to be succinct. They also tend to sound a lot alike.

As many as it takes to describe and explain the beer.

Mine average between 800-1,500 usually, so I went with 1,000. I feel like at that length, you get enough meat to chew on without having to toss out all the fat.

And yes, that was a terrible metaphor. Thank you.

Descriptive doesn't have to be lengthy so I said average 1000 for a review.

I typically glance down to the Overall part so the other part doesnt effect me too much. Id say a nice length would be 500-1000

Whatever it takes to describe the beer. Leave out the details of your day.

Keep it to the point. If it's too short you really aren't saying anything but if it's too long I lose interest.
