Our Beer Club, The Wild Turkey Beer Club, recently celebrated its' 2nd birthday and it got me wondering how many other of these semi-organized club or tasting groups are out there? Speak up if you're in one and tell us about it, do you take yourselves super seriously, how you decide what to drink, etc.?

For us we are not overly serious, in fact sometimes quite the opposite, it's just a good way to gather with friends and try some new beers, and sometimes talk about it. We have a rotating hosting order and the host picks the style/theme. There's one rule and that's not to bring any duplicates. This is our blog if you care to take a gander:

    Cheers!

P.S. Love the polling feature, especially for this thread!

The liquor store I work at holds a tasting about every other month called Suds Lovers. Informal (as far as in-store tastings go) and usually themed on a beer/cider style. Its usually 10 bucks and comes with cheese/nibbles.

I have been kicking around the idea of a non work related tasting series though, what are some cool things other people have done?

@therobot: Looks like a damn fine club.

Yes, I organized a beer club with some co-workers, many of whom are craft beer novices. I am usually tardy in posting the meeting minutes as I am now. We have had three meetings so far with 9 attendees, 9 attendees and 12 attendees. Each person votes for the top 3 beers of the meeting and we compile the results with 3 points for a 1st place vote etc.

We started a beer club in my area a few years ago, have meetings/tastings monthly and even established ourselves as a non-profit. I don't participate as much as I did in the beginning, but that's mostly due to a lack time (family now) and/or interest in what the tastings involve.

How many members do you have, and what were the advantages of becoming a non-profit?

We initially started off as a tasting group of about 10 or so that met at one of the better beer restaurants in town. As the group grew (25-30 at one point), we realized the restaurant we were holding tastings at could no longer accommodate the size of the group. The group also wanted to be more than just a tasting group and wanted to look into hosting events, festivals etc., so the next logical step was to become a sanctioned group that collected dues etc. Problem is, after doing so the enthusiasm of some members waned and the group now has sort of gone back to just being a tasting group that meets up monthly, organized to a degree (tasting wise) but with less emphasis on hosting community events.

I am a member of the Charlotte Beer Club, we have events fairly often. Although, I am much more active in my local homebrew club

I think it would be awesome to set something up like this:

    but for beer lovers...

My buddy had his bachelor party there, it was great. I think it would be awesome to have a club with a temp-controlled cellar that has lockers for brews I really don't want to flippantly drink!
