No worries at all... that's why I re-posted. I only mentioned the previous discussion because I didn't want you to think it was my opinion rather than something that others had already discussed and concluded on...

They seem to pretty clearly be in growth mode right now. Which means, turning a profit is actually a bad thing, as that profit could just be further invested into the growth of the business as it does absolutely nothing sitting in a bank account. I have no idea how well their business is really being run, but from the outside looking in, my hunch is they are doing a much better job than just about anyone else out there. The RS is genius, and for the life of me I can't figure out why other breweries aren't copying it.

I'm confused. Do you have some kind of beef with the Cicerone program, or did something happen involving it that I missed?

I don't think anything happened with it, my guess is that he just has a beef with it. Which is fine, it's a pretty silly program.
Basically what slaphappysnark said. Some people are butthurt about it, but not that many and those people are being extraordinarily silly. The RS next year looks amazing, someone being sad that they're "only" in the RS as opposed to the HS just means that they care entirely too much about status. If the RS was worth it this year, then it's mega-super-duper-extremo worth it next year.

I agree; next year's RS has some bonkers beers. Still think you could, and clearly have, alienate some folks. I am not saying it's logical, but when you're dealing with people, logic is often lost.

They tax the portion of the membership that relates to tangible goods, like the beer and merchandise. Any additional amount they deem to be for the membership would not be taxed.

I think they're also selling convenience. I can just order my beer online, and go and pick it up when it suits me, rather than have to hassle with trading, shipping, ebay, taking time off work to sit in a line for hours.

Do you think the Cicerone is silly if you work in, or are trying to get a job in the industry?

The program is recognized and promoted by A LOT of breweries.

Is it weird when a car company makes different models, appealing to different consumer groups? What about computers? Appliances? Houses? Lawnmowers? Tractors? Beef? There is stratification everywhere, even in communism.

as much as I'm hating on it, Its going to work and they are going to make bank. My only hope is that white chocolate melange and otiose are NOT the RS beers. That would be ridiculous and a slap in the face of this years RS. Sell us something in unlimited quantity, then include... more of it a couple months later.

What? They've been including various beers that were previously purchase-only in each year of the RS. 1 bottle of Melange #3 was included in this year's RS, in fact. Unless you're going for rarity/trade value, why is that a bad thing?

In what job? My guess is that it leaves you woefully under-qualified for anything in the brewhouse, and it doesn't seem like it's necessary or even particularly useful for a server. I could see it for QC, but wouldn't a specialty QC qualification be significantly better? Then again I'm inherently extremely skeptical about anything that tries to hone senses.

Honestly it seems more like signalling than anything. Being able to say "I'm so into beer that I spent time getting this silly qualification" could be useful for that.

Nope, because everyone has an equal opportunity to make the purchase of each model offered (with limited exception), no invite required. Not saying I care either way, but your analogy is flawed.

Server, sales rep, tour guide, or any other position where you interact with the public and are fielding random questions about your beers and beer in general.

My local brewpub requires their servers to get the Server certification, it forced the servers who probably knew nothing of beer to study for a basic beer knowledge test, it helped a lot.

There's no exception, there are fewer cars than people. Its the same thing. Not everyone can own the same car, not everyone can be part of HS. Just because they aren't identical, doesn't mean the comparison is flawed. Your analysis was flawed if anything.

I wasn't thrilled with the melange thing either but at that point no one knew that melange was going to be on the shelf fooorrrever at provisions so it was cool. As someone signing up for a third year, I don't want stuff that is sitting on their shelf, will be sitting on totalwines shelf, or that I JUST bought a whole bunch of. Its $300, man. I don't want leftovers.
