Does anyone know of an authorized store or shipping place in San Francisco that is authorized to send beer?

My friend went to send me my Rare Barrel allocations and they're being returned to him because they detected beer in the packages. Now we have 7 boxes of Rare Barrel that are going to be sitting in his house until I can either pick them up or find a place that's authorized to send.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Did he try to send em all at once? Was he using the TRB shippers or styros? UPS or FEDEX?

I've never shipped legitimately, but have been told by UPS that they can legally ship alcohol for a fee. This was when I dropped off a box and the guy immediately rejected it before I could leave. (It was a horizontal shipper like the ones TRB uses and it was sloshing audibly... which is why I asked the above question). Anyway, the price UPS quoted was about $90 for a case... almost three times the price of shipping "olive oil".

Way I see it you can have him try to ship a case or two at a time, possibly repackaged to minimize audible sloshing or you can just fly out here to pick up your beer and enjoy some CA breweries cause that's probably going to be cheaper than sending 7 cases through legitimate channels.

I'm not sure how legit this is, so I'm not going to put the business' name on it - but I hear there's a popular beer, wine, & spirits shop on Nob Hill that will help out.

My friend was using TRB shippers so it's likely there was some sloshing and FedEx decided to do some investigating. Wish I could just get out there to bring them home myself, but can't get there till at least the summer. Good idea with sending them a couple at a time though. I may need to do that and just use UPS for the 2nd round.

Good to know there may be some stores that offer this service. I know there's some stores in San Diego (Holiday Wine Cellar) that send outside bottles and I use them all the time to send back Hoarders beers. Will do a little calling around tomorrow though. I think I know the store you're talking about. Thanks for the tip.

One other thing.... the TRB shippers are printed "contains alcohol" on them. I know you are an experienced trader but with no idea what your trustees credentials are I will just throw it out there that you may need to tell them that has to be covered up.

Beercraft in Santa Rosa ships alcohol for you, and it looks like they do ship to NJ (its not listed as an excluded state on their website) but that's not quite in SF. Still, if your trustee happens to be making a trip to Russian River anytime soon (or.. perhaps the RateBeer awards tomorrow!) its literally right off the freeway on a frontage road. You could throw a stone through their window from the shoulder of 101. (But don't do that...)

Yeah, my trustee pointed that out and blacked them out with a Sharpie. Good to know about Beercraft too though. That store is pretty awesome and def not far out of the way from Russian River. I got some good suggestions here though so hopefully I can get this done the second time. Now I'm just hoping that FedEx doesn't charge me for the shipment that never made it here.

FWIW , I trustee (for Bruery) for a friend in NJ. In his area FedEx are real hard assess so I always ship US.

What does Beercraft charge for outside bottles? I can't seem to find that information on their site. I'll be at RR in a month and would love to ship from there to make room for more beer in my suitcase!

tell him to go to a wine store and ask if they can ship for him and he'll pay a surcharge.

Also if he's shipping in the boxes rare barrel gives and not actual shippers, it's gonna get rejected everywhere outside of white glove deliveries

Do you have any specific names of stores that will ship beer for you? I'm staying in the Fishermans Wharf area next week.

I don't know if they'll do it, you'll probably have to call and ask, but Wine Club and KL Wines both sell beer and ship beer themselves. Never know.

Whoops should of read entire thread first....but as guy above this post states

You could try giving the Wine Club SF a call I know they ship, just don't know if they will do it for outside bottles. And they sell pulp shippers too if you needed them. https://www.thewineclub.com/

    Hope this is helpful.

Good rule of thumb, always drop a handful of dried pasta in a few corners of the box to help mask sloshing sounds. Never had an issue. Of course I also prefer to double box as well. Also helps with the sound.

I avoid pasta, tictacs or other noise makers because at best it sounds like the box isn't well packaged and at worse it might sound like something is broken. Either can prompt an investigation.

Horizontal orientation is the worst. Sounds like the damn ocean in there. Its all well and good for TRB because they are shipping legally but those shippers they use are going to be a headache for the people using them to forward boxes.

Vertical orientation, tightly packed and almost always double boxed. Its not 100% silent but not loud enough to be heard in a busy store or a running delivery truck.

100% success rate with dried pasta with 20+ shipped using it. But I do agree vertical standing Styrofoam shippers are the gold standard for shipping.

The best part is that with dried pasta, if the recipient is hungry they now have beer AND a meal.
