Pittsburgh - New Beers & Local Breweries

Finally having my first Sunday Morning Stout. Does anyone know what kind of barrels it was aged in?

It tastes like a shot of cheap bourbon added to a great coffee stout. The initial coffee character is fantastic, but there is a fusel-y, bourbon smack in the aftertaste. I know people said this is a "KBS killer," but the barrel character is integrated so well in KBS. This isn't as balanced.

Definitely not a bad beer at all. Maybe another month or two will help.

 

Always nice to put a face to a name. Had a chance to meet @oldmetalguy yesterday for a quick IP trade. Thanks again Jeff. Based on his ba name, I totally expected him to roll up in a 1986 camero IROC. Was a little disappointed in his Honda. Hopefully it's his winter car, and he keeps his IROC in the garage.

 

It's boozy for sure. But it's a major part of the reason I love that beer. "Boozy mess" is in my top five favorite styles.

EDIT: for the record, I'm not quite sure I'm in the camp that would call it a KBS killer. To me, they are pretty different beers despite being the same style. Both are excellent.

 

I stopped to grab some Juju at GEMD Robinson and asked about SMS. The lady said they had it all last week and sold out extremely quickly. When I asked how long they had it, she said ONLY 4 days...

I didn't even know it got here yet, but last week? I think this lady might be slipping into senility. I was not a fan of SMS at all last year, but interested in trying one again to see if it's any better. KBS killer? Bruh.... Not close.

 

So I'm presuming SMS has already come and gone everywhere then?

For those into session stuff, Hop Farm's Mild is on cask at Carson Street Deli (& presumably elsewhere) & is imminently drinkable at 3.9%. I've found that I drink cask beer waaay too quickly. Also tasty: Beagle Brothers Porter from East End (also on cask, 4.4%) & Four Seasons' Amber Lager (5.2%). Yummy low ABV offerings.

 

@randylangford has your store had SMS yet? Apologies if this was touched on and I missed it. If not, any idea when?

 

All of these are on at the Deli or just the Hop Farm one?

 

All. Stopped by yesterday for the first time in about...4 years? Cool staff, good food, good taplist, thumbs up.

Agree...just wish their pricing on bottles was a little cheaper...but for everything you mentioned, they are a bit under-rated if you ask me...

 

SMS has not come into MD Robinson yet... I'm there almost everyday and wouldn't have miss that. The beer lead is the only person who I would believe about any matter concerning beer at that store. The people are nice but seem to have no clue about anything

 

No. The person probably confused SMS with New Holland Blue Sunday which was out a week or so ago. As of Monday SMS hadn't hit with wholesaler yet.

Called a few distributors about SMS they haven't got it yet but it is ordered. Crazy how people in Ohio and Illinois and Florida are telling me that it's on their shelves already but not Pittsburgh
