I have literally never left a single comment on Reddit, though they do talk about me a lot. I may do an AMA for them sometimes, though it's totally a den of trolls... beer is only one of my beats and they tend to be agitated by non-beer stuff, such as my advocacy of density in the form of new apartments, in favor of the homeless, and in defense of public lands. I've definitely only responded to Beervana or Brewpublic posts that are about my work, and it's probably been a year since I've left a comment on either?

It's true that I tend to only join conversations that are about my work and tend to defend that work. I do concede points and I also explain. I'm too busy to post on a lot of random threads, sadly. This is what you have to do in contemporary journalism—though the small Portland media market has been slow to adapt, even with the O actually requiring their reporters to leave the first comment on everything they post. You will see more reporters doing what I do in the next year or two. Way more.

    On the beer:

Fat Head's adapted those recipes. We asked Mike about IBUsive and he's made plenty of changes.

Head Hunter was out because they did not have it available—their contracted hops were not in, which is why Semper FiPA exists.

I respect your situational logic but I think it would have opened up an even bigger can of worms. Maybe next year we'll do an even bigger and crazier version including the 503 area code or the metro area or something.

PLEASE SOMEONE ALERT ME WHEN HOP SHOP IS TAPPED IN PORTLAND.

Looks like Intergalactic Hop Shop kegs are starting to hit the area. Very excited to finally try this.

Any hints to where it's on? I looked a few spots and didn't see it...

This has high scores...to me its like Portland Brewings $2 bombers.
We have it so good here.

Wrapping up my Portland visit. Enjoying a Breakside IPA right now. It gets my vote for best Portland IPA. Wished they would put a date on the bottle. I would grab this more often in my hometown, but I figure it would be old.

Excellent choice. It's the Go-To IPA for me and my wife, and my favorite Portland IPA too (Willamette Week's strict Portland methodology notwithstanding).

We're getting a keg tomorrow and tapping it as part of our 19th Anniversary shindig next Thursday, along with 16 other staff picks.

Holy shit, Phaedrus IPA is the real deal. At least as good as the IPAs Great Notion is putting out, if not better.

OK, I'm interested, but it's hard not to be a bit skeptical about a brewery that brags about providing "Vermont style BBQ."

I've long since become convinced you can find good IPA's in Vermont. BBQ.... not so much.

I've never had "Vermont style BBQ" so I can't comment on how it compares, but the brisket sandwich I had there a couple weeks ago was pretty tasty.

What I've found is that unlike IPAs, all BBQ is good. It's really hard to mess up slow cooked meat.

Yeah, I don't agree with that sentiment either, but as this is Beer Advocate and not BBQ advocate, I figured it was better just to let the comment go.
