The company that eventually became known today as "Pabst" started out as a major US brewer by buying the General Brewing Co./Lucky Lager Brewing Co. Paul Kalmanovitz and his S&P Corporation bought Maier in LA in the 1950s, followed by General/Lucky and then Falstaff and Pearl in the 1970s, and finally Pabst in the mid-1980s.

Slowly, Kalmanovitz's S&P (which became Kalmanovitz Charitable Trust after his death in the late '80s) closed breweries and combined all the companies' brands under the Pabst Brewing Co. umbrella by the 1990s, and then bought most of the Stroh and Heileman collection of labels in 1999.

Somewhere along the line, the former flagship brand "Lucky Lager" - once the largest selling beer on the West Coast with General Brewing a Top Ten US brewer - supposedly became, first, a store brand for the Lucky chain (private label brands was the primary business of Maier and General) and then apparently dropped all together by the early 2000s - it survived long enough to be brewed by Miller in Irwindale, CA like many other Pabst-owned west coast brands after the last 2 Pabst-owned breweries closed. According to Trademark records, Pabst still owns the "Lucky Lager" name, renewing it as late as 2013.

There is a related Lucky Lager brand in Canada, brewed by Labatt. Labatt owned controlling interest in General/Lucky in the late 1950s-early 1970s after they bought the US brewer's parent company. When Schlitz tried to buy Labatt in the 1960s, the Feds stopped the deal over anti-trust concerns, since Lucky was such a large, competitive brand in the West.

Thats awesome. Maybe you pull a double feature and have some Ghost Face Killah while catching the sequel, "Return to Blood Fart Lake".

I don't think you need to have a favorite for the Big Lebowski... Any old oat soda will do.

I'll hold out judgment until the "Best commercial and beer pairing" thread.

Now then, for my "I'm not a stiff" contribution to the thread,

I'd go with multiple beers for Holy Grail. Anything from Duck-Rabbit, followed up by Death by Coconut.

Hahaha yeah maybe some old school 90s beer. Maybe Pete's Wicked Ale? Maybe some Red Dog?

I hope they bring back the show for another season. 6 episodes was not enough!

Ah yes. I forgot about breaking bud. I've had it, it's good. Breaking Bud also sounds like something that could go with a Cheech and Chong movie. That and other things.

Something loaded with diacetyl and the Harry Potter movies...

London Pride with Shaun of the Dead (or maybe World's End or any other Simon Pegg flick)

Spotted Cow - Children of the Corn

Undead Part Crasher with Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Van Helsing (because lawsuits be damned, UPC will always be Vampire Slayer to me)

Heavy Seas Crossbones (or Innes and Gunn Rum Barrel Aged) with Pirates of the Caribbean.

Heavy Seas Peg Leg with Moby Dick

Sexual Chocolate and Coming to America

Old Curmudgeon and Grumpy Old Men

Moonraker Ale - so obvious it can't be typed...shaken, not stirred

Kate the Great (like that can happen) with anything starring Katherine Hepburne

This is fun - thanks to the OP for kicking it off.
