Piggy-backer here.... Looking for a centrally located, recommended, fairly cheap hotel in downtown Portland. Also, would love to do a brewery bike tour - anyone know of any? Seems like the perfect city to do one in. Or even just a place to rent a bike for my wife and I to go on our own adventure.

    Thanks everybody!

Hotels in Portland in the summer are very expensive due to high demand. I don't know if what you described exists for under $250 a night. Try Airbnb as well as regular bed and breakfasts but many have 2 night minimums in the summer.
I'm not sure what breweries you want to go to but the ones on Munjoy Hill are all within a 10 minute walk of each other and the Old Port is small. It is easily done on foot if you don't have a bike.

    King's Head > novare res ??

I thought Novare Res was the mecca.

King's Head usually has a better representation of Maine's craft scene than Novare does, but I'd say they're pretty on par with one another. A place that I think is often overlooked however is Slab - oftentimes they have the best taplist in the city and their food is phenomenal!

But the service at Slab is god awful...

Not better, but if you are looking for local options it usually has a better list. Novare Res has a better "worldly" list. Both walking distance from each other. May as well hit both!

Had the worst service of all time at Kings Head back in April.

King's Head has been hit or miss for me. I can attest however that service at King's Head is great on a Sunday or Saturday morning when you are the only one in the bar.

    Bars with meh service:
    Slab
    Liquid Riot

    Bars with questionable service:
    King's Head

    Bars with good service:
    Novare Res
    Thirsty Pig
    Little Tap House

I had great service at the King's Head bar at least a dozen times. I also really like the Little Tap House, bit more of a walk from Old Port, but great food and good beer options.

Was responding to jhavs liking King's Head, didn't see Novare Res mentioned. That said, loved the food at King's Head, everytime I've been to NR, it's been slammed and food was ok.

But my favorite place for food (other than Duck Fat) was the sushi place over by the Hampton Inn, think it's called Benkay, or something like that. Nice sake' menu in addition to the food.

Totally just reminded me - Pai Mei Miyake has some seriously good food and an underrated tap list. It's a little out of the Old Port area but worth it.

To add to the resturants worth checking out Eventide has a tasty lobster roll and had a small but good draft list when I was there. Foundation Zuurzing went great with the roll.

Novare Res has a cool location with a nice beer garden but if you have a good Belgian beer bar in your town I wouldn't call it a must stop for the draft list.
