I only drink one beer a week and I prefer to have three different styles in any three-week period. Naturally I have no use for six-packs, and bombers are a little bit too much for me.

I love Trader Joe's - they allow purchases of singletons from six-packs with no upcharge. I am happy with their somewhat limited assortment, but I would like to try some new highly-rated beers. Whole Foods once allowed purchases of singletons, but they have discontinued that privilege.

Any suggestions for a San Fernando Valley resident? TIA.

Yes, I am pretty slim. I drink one beer a week for medicinal purposes - per the New England Journal of Medicine, that's all you need to reduce the risk of stroke by 20%. My brother is 10 years younger than I am and he had to have an emergency triple bypass, so naturally I am concerned.

Valley Beverage has some beers available as singles. Not all but more than the average place.

Thanks. I just happened to have called them last night. I intend to check them out in a week or two, hoping for a longshot - they currently are out of Ground Breaker Dark Ale, a beer I'd like to sample. I hope it will show up in their singles section, even though the guy I talked to said it was unlikely.

Something new is bound to strike my fancy since I have only had 20-30 different beers.

I was there several years ago and they did not sell singletons from six-packs. It won't hurt to give them a call for an update, but the odds are against it.

They have a huge selection; I'd love a shot at it.

I'd recommend consulting with your physician if choosing to drink for medicinal purposes as the recommendation from the American Heart Association applies only to a select group of people since there are both risks and benefits to alcohol consumption.

Also, the research data showed that the risk reduction in total mortality by 18% was found in men who drink 1-2 drinks daily and women who drink 1 drink daily.

Definitely understand the concern but wanted to make sure you had the right facts going forward. Cheers.

Thanks, but this from Ask Men:

"In November of 1999, The New England Journal of Medicine stated that light to moderate beer drinkers would decrease their chances of suffering a stroke by 20%. They also stated that those who drink one beer a day compared to those who drink one beer a week experience no difference in reducing stroke risks."

My regular doctor and my oncologist are both fine with me drinking one beer a week. I am never tempted to drink 7 or 14; thank goodness - that would be a logistical nightmare with no car.

In your case, your brother had a triple bypass so the risk you would be more concerned about is your heart attack risk and not your stroke risk which ask men is commenting on.

Ask men is also throwing out data pulled from an article published nearly 20 years ago so would take that with a grain of salt as well.

I recently discovered that Ralphs let you make your own six-pack; there is a separate section with all single beers. Singletons are all $1.99 each, including Warsteiner which is available for $1.17 at Trader Joe's.

On the plus side, they stock many beers that TJ's doesn't, including Koko Brown. I had my first one last week and I certainly enjoyed it. The coconut made for a rich, creamy mouthfeel, and I also like the flavor and aroma.
