Actually, according the MT, that was a pricing error screw-up by someone who basically "sold" it to the distributor for 20ish percent less than they should have. Big hub-bub that everyone was PO'd about. MT gave everyone 20% off on the next sale.

Or they mixed up 12 and 21. I don't shop at Costco but I can't imagine a still very new beer to market going on a clearance sale.

My understanding of the RS/HS discount is its a percentage off of the full retail price.

I've never seen "guaranteed lowest price" as one of our benefits.

So its unclear how a credit is justified.

Generally, I see full retail price for beer at Whole foods, grocery stores and yes, at many breweries. But many warehouse style bottle shops can easily beat full retail price with some being competitive with the RS discount.

Costco is a wholesaler. The prices often beat everyone in town. And that's on prices not marked $*.97. As mentioned, $*.97, means Costco is running a clearance on it, often selling at a loss, to make room for something else. This has more to do with Costco's business model then a reflection on the quality of the product or its producer. A lot of great products get cleared out with *.97 prices. Which drives up Costco traffic, and more importantly, memberships and renewals.

I guess its all in our expectations. If I saw Poterie selling for $12.97, I would enjoy my good luck and buy several bottles. It wouldn't even dawn on me to ask for a credit from the The Bruery, since guaranteed lowest price isn't included in my benefits package.

And I would still buy several bottles of the Anniversary Ale next year, because I like the beer and I'm guaranteed to get bottles at a fair price. Costco is great, but you never know what they are going to have.

This happens too. Prairie is distributed through three different distributors in GA (they're brought in by the Bud distro), and on three occasions we've had their high tier stuff come in priced wrong from one of them. Our two stores are on either side of town so we don't use the same distro, and Okie, BA Bomb, and Birthday Bomb came in at $175/case at one store, but $99/case at the other. Somewhere along the chain something got entered wrong. In fact when Bomb first hit the GA market, retail was only $3.99/bottle because the first distributor to get it had priced it wrong.

That's all it comes down to for me. I've never seen anything say that what we're buying is going to be lowest price anywhere. The Anniversary beers hit distribution so my assumption is that there's always a chance it can be purchased at a price lower than what we pay through RS/HS.

They could not sell their stock to Costco.

I had no idea that any of the Bruery memberships came with a guarantee that you'd pay the lowest price anywhere for Bruery beers. Where does it say that?

This looks more like a "What Beer Are You Drinking Now?" post than a "Bruery RS/HS Allocations" post...

That would just be bad business. The amount of beer that Costco buys and sells is much more than a smaller bottle shop.

    Hi All,

I'd like to chime in about the Poterie pricing at Costco. In California, Costco purchases our beer at the posted price point from our distributors, same as any other retailer. We have no control over how a retailer prices their beer. In the case of one store selling it for $12.97 per bottle, I believe this was done in error. This is well below the price they paid for the beer, and it's very unusual for a retailer to price below the price they paid for it.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers,
    Patrick

Gee, sounds just like what I assumed. @MisterClean , do you still demand a refund/credit?

Seems like he deserves a hug, too, what with all the mental anguish he's suffered.

I think Costco clears stuff out below cost sometimes. I've seen 22oz craft beers priced at under 2 dollars there.

Which, if it's the case here, is a retailer decision. The Bruery can't do anything about it after they sell it to distro. The brewery and the distributor made their money, if the retailer decides to take a hit it's their choice.

The close out can be sweet, if you catch them. I sadly missed out on 4.97 speedway :slight_frown:

Of course, I was just pointing out that it probably wasn't a mistake, they have been known to do that on purpose.

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. I find it a little funny. The grocery store near me won't sell speedway, but the 7-11 will. One day I will figure out why and I hope the reason isn't because Alesmith "is within 5 miles of the store". That would make me mad that I went to the store instead of the other direction to the brewery.
