I don't know about "underrated", as their ratings seem oddly accurate, but in terms of "undertalkedabout", I would vote for Otter Creek/Wolavers. Most of their beers are very solid and affordable. I love the Wolavers Alta Gracia, and the Stovepipe Porter is great. But this is BA, so there isn't really a lot of love for solid breweries that don't make bourbon barrel imperial smoked sour stouts aged on vanilla chipotle turkey legs that get rated 100 by "the bros."

I'll throw in a vote for Smuttynose. I love their labels and their beers are solid at worst with many world class beers (Ry(e)an, Robust Porter, Baltic Porter, etc.)

I need to investigate these folks in greater depth. The only two Otter Creek/Wolavers brews I've tried are the two you mention, and I liked both quite a lot. The coffee aspect of the Alta Gracia was especially spot on.

But I came into this thread with a local/regional answer and a national answer for breweries that aren't poorly regarded so much as they don't seem to get mentioned as often as I'd expect.

Locally I nominate Mayflower. Solid year-round portfolio of beers that don't get up in your face but instead invite you to relax, plus some very enjoyable seasonal offerings.

Nationally I nominate Anchor. Anchor obviously gets plenty of recognition and plaudits, but damn, I consider their porter as a benchmark for the style; I could drink their Liberty Ale for days; they helped set a template for American barleywines; what I've heard about their newish Humming Ale makes me salivate (but I haven't had a chance to try it yet); and, of course, Anchor Steam is Anchor Steam. Kudos, Anchor. Kudos.

BrewDog, people just associate them with being bat shit crazy... Such as beers like Tactical Nuclear Penguin and Nevermind the Anabolics..

But their year round lineup is nothing short of world class. The 5am Saint is probably the best amber ale out there right now, and Hardcore IPA is a very complex, vastly interesting and daring take on the style. Easily my favorite brewery

Thirsty Dog. Siberian Night holds its own against other RISs. Cerberus is a fantastic Tripel, and the Raspberry Ale is pretty good as well. BA Siberian Night and Cerberus are solid too. They just seem to get lost since theyre in the same town as Hoppin Frog, 45 mins from Great Lakes, and the next state over from Founders/Bells/every other MI brewery.

That's actually just an unsubstantiated stereotype. A good friend is a social worker over there, very involved with the tribe. In fact the brewery is subsidized by the tribal casino (which is why these world-class barrel-aged beers are so ridiculously cheap), and a portion of the proceeds from every beer go to a great alcohol awareness program. The brewery is apparently very involved in the local community, which is a great asset for such a depressed area.

Anyway, hope you can get back out here for another bike trip.
