Yea, but you shouldn't be drinking for completely different and distinctly more disturbing reasons. :stuck_out_tongue:

Edit: I might risk stomach bleeding for MO. :flushed:

Flashback Friday beer. Beers like Ayinger are really what started to get me interested in beer and realize there were beer cultures in other countries that are totally different than the macro culture of the USA. Still tastes great. Cheers!

Thanks to @cjgiant for always hanging in there with my saison thread. I owe him one so I bought this beer for today.

This is one of the beers that turned me on when I first started exploring beers. I was at a bar in Manhattan one day and I was totally falling for the bartender. They had Chimay Red / Premiere and the appropriate glassware. They had a policy that if you drank three of them in one night, you got to keep the glass. I had to try this strange beer. It was an eye opening experience that beer could be like that. It was also the most expensive beer I had ever had at a bar, but I was really smitten with it and I decided to live foolishly and shoot for that glass. The fact that I wanted to hang around the bartender helped a lot too. I ended up drinking three and taking my glass home. It's the very same glass in the picture today.

The next time I was out at a bar that had Chimay Red I was very excited, but somehow, the beer in my glass didn't thrill me the same way. Was the keg not well kept? Was it the atmosphere? Was it the bartender?

That first Chimay was a stepping stone that brought me to this website. I haven't drank much of it since. It just never pushed my buttons the same way as that night.

The last time I was in a bar/beer store, there was a woman who was in love with a beer that she had on a previous night a while back, and she was hoping she could find out what beer it was. Unfortunately, there was no way any of us could figure it out for her. I crushed her dreams by telling her that the beer she was looking for could be anything... it was a lost cause, but I also told her that she shouldn't be bothered by this because even if she found it, it wouldn't be as great as the night she fell in love with it.

When threads here ask what beer got you started on this obsessive path. I answer Chimay Red and Schlenkerla Marzen, and that I still drink Schlenkerla but not Chimay. The beer for today was an obvious choice.

It foamed out of the bottle a little upon opening, but once I poured it, the carbonation vanished. The beer was a murky chestnut brown. I'm smelling oxidation. Must not be a new beer by anyone's definition. It has flavors of plum, dark cherry, fig, and dates. It's thinner than many other beers that have similar flavor notes - but I see that as more of an accomplishment than a criticism. There's a herbal bitterness. There's no noticeable alcohol.

I read somewhere that this was the beer that introduced Americans to the dubbel. I don't know anything behind that claim, but it certainly was my introduction. I'm very glad to revisit this beer but I do not think I will be revisiting it again anytime soon. Ignoring the challenges with freshness and price, it's just not a beer I would ordinarily crave.

    Cheers!

Our local Uno has the best beer program of any chain restaurant I've visited. Ducked out of work early for today's 12 Percent Imports event.

Sipping on Crooked Stave Nightmare on Brett, with Evil Twin Imperial Biscotti Break, Stillwater/Westbrook Gose Gone Wild, and Crooked Stave Colorado Wild Sage queued up.

Beautiful! I drink this when the Holiday Sets come in. It's my favorite Chimay offering (Blue isn't that Satisfying to me for some odd reason).

No problem whatsoever, I have no need to actually start the thread. You and @JakeScully had both opened the thread within minutes of each other, and I wasn't sure which one to add to. Your's was like a minute earlier, so I chose it .

My GF was thinking like you with a great title. Unfortunately she (like you :stuck_out_tongue:) held back her ruminations until I had @LeperJim print up 1000 copies of the theme fliers.

So you can have a flashback after you "revisit" Florida, no?!? :grinning:

Cheers to all who have participated so far! Catching up, and will be posting my first beer in a few minutes!!

My last flashback beer for tonight is a Kasteel Beer. Nice beer, but bit boozy to my taste. Can be good thing in some situations.

My first taste of this was when I was all by myself in our student-home during a winter weekend-evening (that was ages ago). Not much left for me but two special Kasteel Beers to keep me warm. I remember I was amazed how much alcohol a beer could hold. And slept very well

This realy is a nice winter beer. Think I buy this one again the coming months.

    Cheers!

A very nice FbF (TbTII) post - and in perfect tune with the spirit. Have you ever had a Dirty Hoe' (raspberry lambic + Hoegaarden, I use appx 1:3, as I recall)? Might help if you grabbed a sixer and your appetite can't handle the other 5.

Another nice beer to revisit. I mentioned to @Buck89 last night when he was talking about SNPA how I thought it was a little to bitter for me back then, but I liked the Saranac Trail Mix.

(Oh, and I'll forgive you sticking in that last, blatantly false thought )

Thanks, since I thought for a minute then that I dropped a bollocks too, and you were supposed to start the thread. All in all good that they were quickly merged and no offense taken.. this should be a big thread.
