If you're using your palette to drink it, that's your first mistake.

I am not a huge fan of it, but that is because it is just SUPER strong bourbon IMO. I have had it a couple times, and it was consistent profile both times - no ashtray.

There are almost no beers on the planet worth paying $80 for.

2015 Rare is definitely not one of them.

I bought Rare this year basically because of, "fuck it, why not?"

I like the people at Goose, and because I literally work right above the pub, I'm in all the time asking the annoying questions of, is this on draft how much more do you have this?

They're good people and make good Chicago beer.

One other aspect people forget too is that these are all Chi-town exclusive release. We all share the advantage of living in a huge city with a fuck ton of good brewery's. Not 100% sure, but in Az (my home state) regular is what you get on BF and only that. I sorta pay attention to outside trading and any BC variant remains fairly sought after. 'Rare' being called 'Rare' still can be called that mainly because I highly doubt going to anywhere outside the Chi area you'll be able to find it in any quantity.

Point: not saying it's the best or well worth its price tag, any BC is a good beer worth getting once a year. Rare is one of those things that it's fun to share and talk about. Other that that, I can't say theres a beer quite like it and there will ever be. Getting multiple is kinda questionable but why not indulge just a little? I'm sure walking out with $100 of Deth or 3F could be seen in the same regard.

Speaking of which, anyone going to wait in the cold for the Orin/Benthic re-release?

I want to but wonder how early one would have to arrive? They are only getting 60 Benthic and 50 Orin I think.

I was going to go after work, but if people are going to line up for it and be gone before I even have a chance, I might not.

Would love to grab one, missed Orin. I doubt they last until I can get there though, especially since they're letting people get one of each.

Disagree. I think its outstanding and I'm not a bourbon lover. I had a few pours this year at Fulton Street and I thought it was amazing. To me it blew away all the other 2016 BCBS (tried Prop, Coffee, and Reg). IMHO its perfectly balanced and super smooth with a perfect mouthfeel.

Wrong. Right about rare. So so wrong on the first statement.

You're actually both right...since they are your opinions. The value or worth of any product is that which anyone is willing to pay for it, so there are obviously beers (including Rare) worth that much...to certain people.

I'm not inclined at this point to pay the $80 for Rare, but I did last year. Different circumstances of how my money is being spent now, plus already having a couple in my inventory. It's all good - it doesn't bother me that I won't get one and it doesn't bother me that other people will fork over their money for it. It's all good, and there is plenty of beer for all of us.

I don't think there's a beer out there that I'd consider worth $80 (MSRP), but I'm also not a big fan of spending big on consumables. That price for a whiskey is hard to swallow, but the whiskey has (generally) been in barrels for a decade+ and can be enjoyed for years to come (even after opening). So the investment feels less like a "I paid $80 to have a beer tonight" sort of thing.

With that being said, I understand how the market works, and I don't begrudge Jewel charging $80 for Rare. I'm passing on it since I decided to grab Orin today, but $60 was closer to what I'd deem "acceptable" for a special beer, so I'm cool with their markup. I paid...something like $70 for a bottle of Prop '14, because it was my gf's favorite beer. Hated doing it, but it was worth it in the end.

I'd also add a bottle of whiskey has what, 14 servings? Compared to 2-4 (depending on ABV) or so for a bomber (Rare is even less).

Not the way I pour it!! Kidding (although typically I will run through multiple servings in a night, since a 1-2 oz. pour of anything is pretty weaksauce).

But yeah, this is one of the reasons I'm super hesitant to grab a bottle of Rare at GI's taproom--Even if I bring someone else, we're both paying $40 to have basically a very generous pour of Rare at the taproom. Sticks in my craw!

I think you've spent more than $40 of your time lamenting on here whether or not to buy a bottle! I kid, of course, but also it rings somewhat true to just get out there and enjoy yourself. If you really need someone to throw in another $40, let me know. It may not be my favorite, but I still think it's a pretty fun experience.

Cool, I'll keep that in mind! Luckily I'm at work, so my time is...well, worthless as far as I'm concerned. :stuck_out_tongue:

Has anyone tried that Old Dank Nic beer that Dark Matter brewed? I couldn't find anything about it.

Also anyone have any leads on Black Note? Sounds like it may have hit Chicago but not sure...

Definitely, check the Black Note thread. LP plus several burbs. May be gone at those by now though.

I don't think Old Dank Nic is a beer. It's a cold brewed coffee in a bomber pretty sure. Same as they have done with Black Hole Necromancer at Dark Lord Day.

Yeah, saw that, both the ones near my work didn't get anything.

Ah gotcha, had no idea, thanks for the heads up.
