I left around 5:45, but the guy next to me went the full gamut. He was going to get 1, saw I was getting 2 so he said I'll get 2 as well. Then when the bartender came, he got 3. Finally, he got his 3, and said "you know what, I'll take a 4th". He likely had to wait a while for the 4th, but yeah - that's the mindset with this sort of thing.

It was definitely more crowded than I've seen the 3 or 4 times I've been at happy hour time. But not awful. I can't make it today, but damn, Indignant is a phenomenal BA stout so I'm bummed.

I know we throw this around a lot, but that sort of response is "Chicago beer scene" as fuck.

    "I'll have one."

"Wait, is that guy getting two? This must be a good beer; fuck it, better do that."

"Hmm, shouldn't I get more than him if this is good? I'll have 3."

"Hold on, how many can I have, again? 4? Yeah, if I'm gonna get 1, I might as well just get 4, 4 is more than 1, after all."

    If I had 3 KBBS, I wouldn't give them up for just 1 Porsche 911, c'mon!

They also were pouring it too, so the mindset was also "this is damn good beer" - and that played a factor as well. 5 oz pour was $3, 10 oz was $5, and the growler was $10. That's like a foreign language to me for a delicious BA stout.

Oh yeah, I'm just poking fun at that particular guy as you portrayed him; I don't begrudge anyone having a few sips and saying "fuck man, I better stock up!" I personally wouldn't get 4 howlers just because I couldn't drink 'em all fresh, but in a vacuum the price you're getting them for makes it totally understandable.

That's why I always purchase the limit on Porsche 911s, good to have extras for trades!

ISO: Rare '15 (sealed in box) - still available at a few Binny's locations I believe

    FT: Clare's Thirsty howler

    1:1, Ravenswood

Saw this in the trading forum and had a nice chuckle

Fuck me, man, I can't even joke about this shit?

A $10 howler at Haymarket for a $70 (at Binny's)? Not saying the beer in the howler isn't worth it, but c'mon.

Hope the guy is stuck drinking 4 howlers of Clare's and gets sick of it after the 2nd one....

Some of the trade forums are rediculus... I had the chance to get 4 howlers right off the bat...I def heard a few dudes talking about what they were gonna ask for in trade...
....I personally got 2 howlers because I wanted to actually drink them......One guy was like "man you're only getting two?..You could trade that for some good stuff"....I said why? Claire's is good stuff and I only want what I know I can drink....The Chicago beer scene drives me nuts

That's about as far from $4$ that you could get.

Right? We've got awesome fresh shit HERE! I get wanting to trade for specific beers, but don't trade just because you can.

This is practically the exact mantra I need to go by in 2017. It's so tempting to grab other stuff and/or extras of things I'm already buying, but I have so much beer already and there is always so much good stuff around the corner that it's not necessary. Easier said than done sometimes, though!

I feel like there is a downturn in the secondary beer market...there are so many great options out there that you aren't seeing the major whales of years past. Why spend an arm and a leg to get some greatly hyped insert-coast-here beer when you can get one much closer to home these days for much cheaper?

I definitely get it, it's just getting more and more worth it to just drink what we've got here.

Exactly. And especially now that local breweries are hopping onto trendier styles like the NE IPA, there's less and less active need to try other areas (outside of "hey I want to know what Jjjulius tastes like").

I stopped in completely unknowing of a limited release. Saw the crowd at the bar, people with their thermal insulated bags, and knew it must be a stout release night. Decided to get a pour of whatever was causing the commotion. Saw people with 8 howlers and was shocked, considering it was so sweet I could only drink 1 glass (and I like sweet beers). Then I saw all the trade offers for it later and it clicked. I was with two others who don't drink beer and could have theoretically walked out with 12 howlers for $120+ glass cost and then traded it for practically any beer I wanted. Honestly, I didn't think it was 'that' good (admittedly don't like raspberry in beers) as there was no barrel and a lingering raspberry taste that took an au cheval burger to get rid of.

Yeah, I get not liking it if you don't like raspberry in your stouts/beers in general, for sure.

But having to get the taste out of your mouth with an Au Cheval burger is definitely a good problem to have.
