Word has been out for a while. This ain't the northeast. Hell, there at least 2 other breweries in Richmond making beer that's on par or better.

There are a lot of beer styles that are hard to make and I dont think the NE style IPA is one of them. Had just as good if not better versions from breweries not named with a T. Mumford, Moonraker and Fieldwork are all doing great IPAs in California, Heist in Charlotte does great as well. I think the statements above about how more breweries producing better beer will hopefully make people waiting in crazy lines a thing of the past (or maybe not).

I also find it much more enjoyable to trade for beers from lesser known but up and coming breweries than the super well known ones. You would think they only release beers a couple times a year with how hard some people hold on to and value those beers.

Yeah it's really exciting to watch all these new breweries spring up that make beer just as good as the heavy hitters. Prison City Brewing (who makes Mass Riot, that beer that won Paste's best IPA blind test) is just a few miles from where I grew up.

veil isnt going to constantly be like treehouse or some of the others. like other mentioned some releases will be crazier than others but the word is certainly out. theyve been all over the news/blogs/beer magazines. don't see it changing too much.

As for CT3, had one the other day and reminded me a lot of doubleganger. Dee lish.

    Agreed!

There will probably always be lines for whatever the current new/hot thing is. But I think that will have more to do with collector mentality than it will with being forced to wait in lines to access the highest quality beer out there.

I had my first can last night. I didn't get a "burn" - what I did notice was the dry finish that a lot of Trillium beers have was excessively grassy/bitter. I wouldn't go so far to say it wrecked my palate, but it lingered into the start of the beer I had after it. My guess is it has something to do with the Enigma hops. It wasn't terrible by any means, and I'm looking forward to trying it again in a couple weeks, but it is not my favorite from either of those brewers.

I agree with the idea, to an extent, especially when it comes to one particular beer style for a brewery. Locally, you've got the limited Hardywood/Lickinghole stouts drawing crowds (even if less than in the past) or places like Veil drawing lines for the IPAs right now. As more people come on the scene though, it's harder for the new guys to make a splash. But the thing with Veil is this is just the beginning. People already love their NE style D/IPAs but Matt isn't releasing his first BA beer until next month on their anniversary. He's still yet to release a spontaneously fermented beer, one we know has already been set aside for 2 years out, and he currently has (EDIT: one of) the only coolships in the state.

Point being, in the general grand scheme, I do see less beer lines in the future. I see more/longer lines in the works for The Veil though, whether it's for the IPAs or not.

Thats good to hear about Extra Kreme. I have 8 cans waiting for me and a lot of people on BTV have said it has mellowed out.

Yeah Im not saying Veil's lines are going anywhere, its a nationally known and sought after brewery. However I think it will be easier and easier to get better quality beer as the market equilibrates and competition works. It used to be you could just open a brewery and as long as it was better than domestic lagers people would come. Thats not really true anymore. Competition will force breweries to do better and I think we will see some closures in the future but in the end it should all be good for the consumer.

But Im pretty tired of the hype around some breweries/beer and the lengths (and money) people will go to to acquire them. But I guess thats in everything including beer.

Pen Druid Brewing has a couple copper coolships and uses their own yeasts. I suggest you check them out if you haven't already done so.

I agree with you 100% here. What's interesting to me, though, is there are places popping up that are making beer worse than domestic lagers that apparently seem to be flourishing. I can think of 2 locally where I've had bad beer but there are people who like them. I get there's no accounting for taste, but if places can make bad beer and keep the doors open I wonder how long before we see it start to settle out.

I did not know that and they're now a must on my list. I admittedly had not heard of them - 100+ brewers in the state these days. I apologize for my ignorance so thanks for setting me straight!

I think the SponFerm brews are gonna draw massive crowds and lines. With Matt's training at Cantillon, I expect those beers to be in HIGH demand.

@oldn00b Pen Druid may be my favorite brewery in VA. most of their beers are made with their own locally foraged yeasts. won't find a NEIPA, DIPA there... really cool/chill spot nestled at the bottom of the mountains. the Brothers Carney (owners/brewers) are super friendly!

Just a heads up, the announcement about the Anniversary ticket sales that go on this weekend has not been announced yet. Apparently "the day go away from us" yesterday and they posted it would come this morning so be on the lookout.

Seems like the brewery and staff are getting more overwhelmed than normal lately. From putting out a sub par beer a couple weeks ago that just now is tasting as it should have been when released to not following through on dates/timelines of when some recent information was going to be posted.

Add that to the struggling to keep enough beer on draft, it seems that the popularity is starting to catch up to them. Hopefully the quality does not suffer like Extra Kreme's did.

So the VIP ticket went up to $165 from $150 and unless I am interpreting this wrong, the GA tix are not an option online for the first week of sales (lol).
