Pretty much all shops in Seattle are limiting purchases to one 12oz. bottle per person per day. Founder's just started distribution to WA earlier this year. I think KBS is excellent but we have local brews that are as good, especially from Fremont and Reuben's.

True. But I know several stores that sell more Founders than New Glarus and are getting shit for allotment too.

I think demand is still there, but down from what it once was. Part may even come from how limited it is, so people aren't even trying anymore, especially with a million new breweries coming up, many with their own coffee bourbon stout.
I've been lucky to get some most years, at least the past 8 or 10. It's still a great beer, though I do think it takes a bit of time to mellow out. I've found that most of Founders bigger beers are hot and boozy when fresh, though they age beautifully.
I have a few places that I go, a couple that gets a few of these limited releases, so I hit those places first, and usually won't bother with the bigger names. I don't need cases of the stuff - a 4-pack or 2 is plenty for me.

Everyone is definitely right when they say local barrel-aged coffee stouts have caught up to KBS. I was able to find KBS for the first time ever in southern DE. Founders in pretty new to MD so I was able to scoot across the border and get some. I bought it simply because I have never had it before and it is such a popular beer but I may not buy it again. Sunday Morning Stout from Weyerbacher is all over where I live and it's only $14/4-pack vs the $25 I paid for KBS and I feel that SMS is actually better. Still fun to finally find KBS but it has probably jumped the shark.

And let us not forget how great High-Westified was...and how easily available it was...and how cheap it was...and in 6-packs.

our store is not to far from table and vine and we have the same thing going on. People are walking right by the stack and buying boatloads of building 8, brewmaster jack, fort hill etc. I think the KBS customers are still in line at treehouse....... or at least trillium or brick and feather if they went to treehouse the day before

I did the same thing - had a chance to get a 4-pack for the first time last Friday and went for it. With my wife's help, I did a blind taste test with SMS and thought SMS tasted a lot better on my palate. We don't get Weyerbacher in Alabama but I can go to Atlanta and pick up as much as I want for $8 less per 4-pack.

Yeah I'm in Charleston and Bottles has had this for almost a week now and when I went in on Tuesday they still had like 5 cases on the floor.

I tried KBS this last weekend for the first time ever and I can honestly say I don't see the hype on it. There are many other BB aged stouts easier to find that I think are better. Im kinda glad I got to try it before buying it as I had been chasing it around the past few years and was always disappointed I could never get my hands on it. Now since I've gotten to try it, its a meh option for me. Doubt I'd pay $20 or more a four pack for it.

More for everyone else I guess.

    Great post topic @Biff_Tannen

Here in Houston, TX we still stand in line and fight over it. Which is really annoying.

Its gotten easier then it was in past years, but we still arent to the point of seeing it "sitting" for any extended period of time.

    Completely agree.

The rest of their product line is pretty ok compared to other breweries.

And, with many markets getting more competitive....

This is my first time hunting down KBS, so I can't speak from experience, but here in Eastern OH and Western PA, we got our releases on Monday, and everything's already gone. Shipments weren't huge, but there were hold lists and people rushing in as soon as it came out.

Haven't had it in about a year, but I still love that beer. Would absolutely take the opportunity to buy a few four packs if I could.

I've seen posts similar to this about other beers before--the whole "there are so many better, easier to find [type of beer] out there" thing.

And as in those cases, I'm genuinely curious for examples.

I'm far from a KBS fanboy, but I also have a hard time thinking of *any* Bourbon Barrel coffee stouts that are not only easier to get but better tasting as well. In terms of availability, things like Weyerbacher's SMS comes to mind. Not sure I find it better, but that's a personal preference and it's in the ballpark, so that works. Dragon's Milk is easier to get but there's no coffee, and BCBS has similar availability until you add coffee then it becomes extremely scarce.

Anyhoo, I'm genuinely curious about all these better, easier to get options, because I wanna go buy some.

Can you get Oso by you? Convenient Distraction is one of the top of my head that I think is way better then KBS. And that stuff sits around here everywhere. Honestly I didn't pickup much barrel from KBS, so for that matter just about any regular coffee stout fits the bill. Lagunitas High Westified is 10X better then KBS. Those are just a couple off the top of my head right now.

KBS hit here in the DFW area this week and it's pretty much all gone so there is still a lot of anticipation and interest with lots of places limiting it to a single 4-pk and some limiting it too one12oz (i.e. breaking the 4-pks!). $20/4-pk or bomber.
Abyss was the same way a few weeks ago though the variants went within hours. To that point, I agree that Founders should do some variants!
