We love Wilderness! We're going tomorrow to get the 'Birthday Mug' I haven't had the Big Guy Rye, so I'm looking forward to that. DC Mountain is one of his favorites when they have it. Refuge is always a great go to. We just went to Wren House for the first time last month and we really liked it. We both love Tower Station and Drgoon. I went to Total Wine last night and picked up a couple six pack of mix and match. I think I'll get a couple more mix and matches and then stick up in a few six packs that I know he likes. It's looking like it might be very IPA heavy, but that's ok in the summer. I've never heard of Todd or Axe Man. I'll have to look them up. You know, I almost feel a little guilty because this is a gift I'll be enjoying just as much as him!

My ideal fridge would be stocked with a couple of belgian blondes and hopefully there would be room left for beer.

Todd the Axe Man is an IPA from Surly. Pretty much just distributed in the Midwest/Great Lakes regions, but Arizona and Florida Total Wine stores got a one time shipment relatively recently. I think Todd is their best offering, but Furious is good too, if you can find it.

Hard to say without knowing what's available in AZ, but some general thoughts:

    1. Judge for yourself based on the pictures, but I feel like a wall of cans is more impressive looking than a bunch of bottles (just for the shock effect). Depending how much you want to buy, you could make a wall of cans that's only one can deep (meaning remove them from their packages) and hide bottles behind them for a second surprise reveal.

    2. It sounds like you both have similar tastes? So err on the side of things that YOU like so that worst case you can drink those and take him on a beer run to pick up other goodies later. On the other hand, I bet you've got group events (July 4, etc) coming up where you could bring and share anything you felt meh about.

    3. If you're shopping at a local bottle shop I'd hope they would give good advice. If you're shopping at a larger chain store or grocery store their folks there can sometimes be rad and sometimes just mindlessly pushing the stuff they're overstocked on. I know my Mom has gifted me a couple pricey shelf turds that the clerk sold her on.

    Good luck!

Can't go wrong w the original. Vinny invented the DIPA. This is actually my fridge real time -- thanks to a shipment today from @tommykimchi. Swami ain't no slouch either. If you want t to trade for some Alchemist or Trillium beers sometime -- message me and we can work something out. Cheers.

You can buy Surly beers on line from France 44, if your in a state that's legal to ship to. Abrasive and Todd The Axe Man should be fresh and available.

I've had Furious! My husband's family is from Green Bay and they brought some out here. It was a great beer.

Thanks for the display suggestions! I like the idea to put the cans in front for the shock value. I even thought I could get a total of 40 beers. I definitely want to add some bombers too. Yes, we have similar taste in beer, which is really nice.

I suggest you fill the fridge with Natty Lite.Keystone, and Coors. This will surely upset him and put a strain on your relationship which could lead to you guys splitting up and then you could find a nice guy here on BA...Hi! My name's Mike.

Oh man, if I knew your husband's family was from Green Bay that would have completely changed my post above. The post would have been the most detailed and specific ever. :grinning:

Suggest you fill that thing with a case of Westy 12s. He will never leave you
Oh wait, you're in AZ, you may have shipping difficulties. So just put a couple local sixers and a few nice bombers. That would work for me.

Everyone has good advice and shots to guide you on the "what" to stock - my only 2 centavos here is to plan on the stocking and drinking rate and pace. You want those freshies (IPAs and pales) to be had early, but stock up on darker browns and stouts that can handle 4-6 months of aging without turning into shite. If it's all IPAs, they will fade fast if you don't do 2 a day... You're a great person for doing this. Cheers all!

I hadn't thought of that. I'll get some other beers too. He likes Scottish Ales. We love stouts and porters as well. It's hard to drink them in the summer though. It's a mental thing. Black Butte Porter is my goto for porters. I'll drink that anytime. My husband loves Founders Breakfast Stout. I'll get some of those as well. We had Goose Island's Bourbon County Brand Coffee Stout at a local beer pub and that was amazing! I don't think they have that available though.

So, if I was interested in beer trading, AZ has issues?

I haven't had any issues, other than the fact that we don't have any "it" breweries here.

As for dark beers to age in the back of the fridge, I'll mention Modern Times again: City of the Dead and Black House.

You'd probably have a hard time finding trading partners. You might want to find an online store. If you're just looking to fill the fridge with things available to you is fill it with mostly hoppy beers, lagers, and session sours. I'm not able to drink stouts and porters often here in Iowa in the summer, I can't imagine drinking darker beers in the Arizona heat. If you trade you may be able to do a locals for locals with someone. I know some people are trying to tick all 50 states, if you could include an Arizona and New Mexico beer I would think you could get something done.
