Looks like there's a new high water mark for pricing

I had their other milkshake meme and loved it. It may not be nuts that the extra cost is correlated to the extra ingredients they are adding. I will happily give this beer a try.

Looks like I can create some space and pitch the Windmill growler guilt free....almost pricing it like there wasn't a world class brewery a mile down the road.

^This. Skrap Metal is excellent. Great nose - get that big fruity aroma as soon as you pop the can open. Slight bitterness to the finish. Agreed on the body, but I wasn't necessarily expecting it on this one either, so I'm good with that. I had Slim Hazy last night which I found unremarkable. This however, IMO, is excellent. Glad to get, and look forward to sharing with friends this weekend.

To be fair, milkshake ipas are generally more expensive. TH milkshakes are like $26 a 4pk. It's pretty known you're paying a heavier price tag.

I think we're now gettig to price points im not willing to spend. $18 was REALLY pushing it for me.

I totally understand why they are priced the way they are, but it's starting to get outside my budget. I'd rather have 18 Fist City (or 60 pbr) than 4 cans.

I hear ya - I think that for me these will have to be something interspersed with other options. I picked up a sixer of Leinenkugel's anniversary lager for $7.99 today and it was just nice to not drop a ton of money on some beers.

It's like they say the best way to save money is don't eat out, prepare your own meals at home. If these things keep escalating in price, I'm going to have to start crunching numbers to see if home brewing is worth my time....

I'm not even close to being well-off, but I think that these beers at "these ridiculous prices" are so sporadic it does not hurt my budget at all.

interesting, i'm just getting into the style, and $15-18 seems to be the baseline.

once i narrow down my go-to's, that's still a hefty price to be shelling out even semi-regularly.

    It is

I have a keg full of homebrew NEIPA in my fridge most of the time that I like better than most of NEIPAs that I can buy.

You can also choose to put the exact hop combo into it that you like. Currently I have a citra/galaxy that's hitting the spot.

After the initial investment of equipment, I pay about $50 for ingredients in a 5 gallon batch of NEIPA...which comes out to a $1.25 for a pint... which would be a $5 4pk. The initial investment was about $600 I would estimate.

Yeah, I'm with you on the pricing. Getting a bit tougher to plop down $18 for a 4 pack when Lizard King is staring at me at $10.

I'm curious about this, if one was going to get into homebrewing NEIPAs, is it best to just start fully with all grain methods? Is it best to 'learn the ropes' with extracts? Or how would you recommend getting started homebrewing NEIPAs?

While I totally understand the pricing issue, it doesn't factor in very much to me for a couple reasons:

    1) When not buying the most recent flavor-of-the-month NE IPAs, I'm probably grabbing one-offs from HA, crowlers from Corridor, growler fills from FR, etc. The HA 4-packs always run me $15 or 16, the crowlers almost $10, and so on. HA is thus a wash, and the Corridor and FR stuff "has to" be drank the same day (I don't like that loss of carbonation overnight), which means I'm drinking 32 oz. that night (typically a 16 oz beer is as much as I'll do in a night, and most week nights I don't drink beer).

    2) I don't have a lot of go-to beers because I really enjoy trying new stuff, but one of my dependables is Navaja. That's also $15-16, and to add insult to injury, is only around for 6 months of the year.

I think what it really comes down to is (from a budgetary perspective), what are you looking for from beer, and how much do you drink it? If you just want a good beer to drink, and especially if you want that beer to stock your fridge pretty well, I can see going the "bang for your buck" route, and picking up Lizard King, or Tuna, or whatever your personal fave is. If you're like me, and you don't drink enough to justify 24 packs taking up your fridge, the $16 for 4 price point is fine, because it gets you a decent amount of beer (4 chances to have a beer, as opposed to one with a 32 oz. crowler), doesn't break the bang (even though it's not cheap), and gives you multiple tries of the same beer, which is nice. I'd kill for a Squeezit 4-pack, and would certainly pay $20 (which would line up just about even with the crowlers).

Not to answer for ECCS, but I learned to homebrew NEIPAs from this very site. Mostly as a means to drink them as there was only Mikerphone, if you could get them, and a few other poor (imo) attempts in Chicago at the time. Check out the Homebrew forum. Lot of really good info in there.

I'm amazed every time I walk in and out of Corridor within 5 minutes with a great NEIPA compared to what it was like a year ago.

What? FR pressure fills their growlers, they last for weeks. I've even had a Corridor crowler that was 12 days old have the same amount of carb as when it was straight from the tap.
