That may have been the case a long time ago. ABI seems to have learned that craft beer drinkers want experimentation and not just an alternative.

The acquisitions since Goose Island have offloaded their standard offerings to mass production at other ABI facilities leaving the brewery itself to focus on their experimentation/special beers.

OP, the problem you'll find with Houston is we are a spread out city and close to downtown for us, could mean 20-30 min drive, depending on traffic, from actual downtown. I didn't read all the post but are you planning on driving or Ubering around town?

Gotta agree with @TxUltraRunner on this one. Petrol has one of the best burgers in town. Hay Merchant's burger is a fancy attempt at a Double Double though, so a Californian like the OP might really enjoy that.

Having said that Hay Merchant is the best beer bar in town, in terms of variety and selection. But there are a lot of great places to get beer these days thank goodness. One very Houstonian place that is near Saint Arnold, 8th Wonder and Sigma is Moon Tower Inn. It's an outdoor ice house style place with great "fancy" hot dogs. They even brew their own beer so it may technically fit what the OP is looking for.

My 4, in no particular order

    1. Saint Arnold
    2. Holler Brewing
    3. Brash
    4. Whole Foods Post Oak

Also my opinion: 8th Wonder is garbage. I like 10% of their beers, and none of my 4 trips to the brewery has been pleasant. Bush league

This right here. Saint Arnold's brewery as your prep and then Hughie's.

Just went to the new Hughie's yesterday and it is the same as the old one with nicer plates . My favorite place to eat downtown as they have a decent wine selection for the wife and always a good selection of taps. Plus the new one has a full bar in the back if that suites you

This, 8th wonder sucks outside Rocket Fuel. 8th wonder has a great space but it's too bad they skimped on beer making. If you want beer in EaDo then go to Sigma.

Totally agree. I think they sell mostly due to their branding, nostalgia for the dome, etc; certainly not for quality

Just want to throw out that I really enjoyed Town In City when visiting last year. Smaller place, which I tend to like. Saint Arnold is classic and a must. Agree that 8th Wonder is overrated.

So, I'm gonna put both feet in my mouth here:

The dudes from 8th Wonder are driving around in their army truck rescuing people from the flooding. That's fucking awesome. I will be buying some of their beer the first chance I get.

Love them or hate them, but you can't say they don't love the city and the people here. They are about to drop Astro Turf in cans so you can buy the shit out of that

Gotta give props to all the brewers in Houston I've seen over the past few days doing their part, especially with having water avail. If anyone sees any fundraisers being done by Houston breweries, can you post here please? Wife and I are scheduled to go down next weekend, obviously up in the air at this point...but if we do end up going, we'd like to do our part.

Cheers to all fellow Texas Gulf Coast beer nerds and beer snobs who have been affected and/or have family affected by Harvey.

St Arnold, 8th Wonder, Eureka Heights, No Label are all doing a ton. Freetail also had a big fundraiser.
