A part of me wonders if they will upgrade members that are in DC or on the east coast to generate traffic at the DC location.

If I hear that they're doing that I'm not going to renew.

    Actually I'll still renew

BRB changing address on account to old NJ address. My sister better keep an eye out for my incoming HS invite!

Nobody knows to be honest. I spent a year in PS, a year in RS and got my HS invite. I never spent money in the TR when I was in RS. I did buy a shitload of beer though.

BTW, if any of you are still sitting on any 2014 Bourbon Barrel Smoking Wood you may want to move those up in the line. The one I'm working on right now is showing some signs of souring but it isn't at an enamel eating level. Very noticeable though and it definitely isn't nearly as good as it is un-soured.

I've been in RS for 3 years and live on the East coast, no HS invite for me. I do look forward to the HS beers that trickle down to RS, it's a guilty pleasure of mine. The HS members tears that bathe the bottles are a great adnunct for all beers.

Maybe next year I'll get the invite.

After 5 years in RS, finally got my HS invite. Was 100% going to be dropping Bruery this year... not sure anymore.

Just got my RS renewal card in the mail, 2018 includes:
    • 9 Bottles
    • An RS Glass
    • Invitations to Events
    • Ability to add on person to your account for Tasting room discount and fulfillment center access.

Not to jump on you in particular, but I've never understood this impulse. Despite all the complaining evident in these annual threads, this wavering seems to come up every time renewals/upgrades roll around.

You were leaning towards dropping out, but now that you've been offered the opportunity to spend considerably more for a few additional guaranteed bottles, a slightly greater discount on bottles that're pretty damn expensive to begin with, and the (we now know to be temporary) promise of bottle exclusivity, you're back in?

Without a meaningful suggestion that quality is going to improve (which I imagine plays into the thinking of anyone who does in fact drop out—it did for me when I was considering making one of the tier jumps), I just don't see the upside in sticking around; Hoarders invite or no.

Full disclosure, I am no longer in any of their societies, so maybe I'm just considering it differently—sunk costs and whatnot.

Agreed 100%. And that's coming from someone who is still a member.

You're not wrong. My feelings aren't very logical.

I was going to comment on this earlier but held back.

But since it appears others are baffled by this line of thinking, I'll jump in too.

It reminds of an old Woody Allan joke:
    (paraphrased not an exact quote)
"Two ladies are having dinner in restaurant, one says the food here is terrible, The others says I know and such small portions"

Full disclosure : Satisfied RS customer ( 1 year PS, 3 RS ) no HS invite, and no thought of not renewing my RS membership.

I just don't get this point of view: "I'm leaving, oh wait, I can now buy more of the service I didn't want a minute ago, that changes everything."

I got my RS renewal notice so they are sending them again. I think my brother is going to take over since he's close to DC and I basically never buy anything anymore.

There are actually some additional perks to being in HS over RS. Although some of the HS exclusive beers trickle down to RS, the good ones don't (e.g., Room for More, BT Reserve, Hoarder's Cuvee, etc.). Extra 5% discount, extra tickets and early entrance to anniversary party (and HS exclusive pours), etc... and if you can find somebody to split the HS annual buy-in these extra perks come at almost the same price as RS.

But, as I said before, my decision to upgrade when I wasn't planning on renewing is admittedly not logical/rational. I had been hoping for an HS invite for years now, and even though I was finally over the RS membership, the HS invite is still intriguing. Can't justify it from a common sense standpoint, but that's just how I feel.

FWIW, I was going to be dropping RS in favor of Rare Barrel, but now that HS is on the table I might keep Bruery and drop Rare Barrel. Decisions decisions...

Crap, I don't think I even realized there was a 2012 version and a 2014 version - I bought a few bottles in the late June sale which appear to be 2014, I think all the ones I'd had before that (which was one of my favorite Bruery beers ever, love the smokiness) were 2012. I hope they're okay. :slight_frown:

I most recently had a 2012 a couple months ago and it was still flawless.

Yes, we are all aware of the additional perks of HS, And aware that those of us really interested in the good HS beers, end up getting pours of them regardless of the society we are in. Yes the 5% discount is nice, if you are interested in their beers without the 5% discount. ( Not sure I would want 5% off beers from a brewery that I was "over" )

    But this:
Does make sense to me. I do get liking the recognition that your have been a loyal customer.

But I am curious why you were going to drop your membership.

Surely it can't be not getting easy access to a handful of beers, 5% off and a few extra tickets? There must be something about the RS membership that you were unhappy with?

I just have too many memberships. Was going to cut one, and RS was at the bottom of the list. HS might not be at the bottom of the list.

Don't think I've seen a bruery beer rated as low on untappd as share this: mint.

    Was it really that bad?

If you use mint toothpaste, you will hate it (especially Colgate, it seems). If not, then you might like it just fine, but you still probably won't. It just really needed more sweetness to balance it out.
