Moving to Cleveland from Illinois? Boy LeBron sure did create a lot of jobs! :stuck_out_tongue:

You'll want to follow the New to Ohio thread, and for larger stores will probably have luck at Market Districts & Heinen's, and Smaller stores like Rozi's, Mack's, Circle A, etc...

I'm sure the many social media groups will be all lit up about it. Careful though, I hear one of the Cleveland groups is pretty uptight about discussing anything not related to Cleveland beer lmao.

Hoping distro is as good as its been with recent KBS releases. It was everywhere in the city.

I've had CBS on tap twice, and been pretty underwhelmed both times - the first time I had it side by side with KBS, and preferred KBS. I'll certainly give this year's version a try if I can manage a bottle or preferably find it on tap.

Honestly, I'd have to agree with you. I'm not sure how old it was when I finally had it, so maybe that had something to do with it. Either way, the maple barrel really didn't have all that much influence that was drastically distinguishable from KBS. Having them side by side on draft, I only found a slightly varying level of booze to differentiate the two, and really to a negligible degree.

I've had CBS once, but it was unexpected, and I didn't have the palate then that I do now, so I don't remember a lot about it. Looking forward to hopefully tracking it down again.

That's my other concern, my palate has definitely changed. Either way, I'd definitely like to try this recent release, at least on draft, to taste it "fresh."

Same here. I first had it in March of 2015, and then sometime about a year or so later. It tasted pretty different both times, and my palate has certainly changed, so it's very possible I have a completely different outlook on it this time around.

I wonder how many times I'd find this quote in your comment history if I went back and looked, given that there are multiple Ron Burgundys on the site.

That doesn't sound like they gave you the right beer at all. I can't think of any maple beer other than Funky Buddhas Maple Bacon Coffee or Wide Awake where the syrup is more prominent. It honestly drowns out any coffee flavor for the most part. I have had it 3 times on draft (only once at Founders) and same experience. Pugachev's Cobra and Black Maple would probably be next in line.

Well...this was at Brew Kettle a few years back, and our group had 4 individual allotments of it. If BK fucked it up 4 times, with the Founders rep in house, then, they really fucked us over a barrel with no lube :joy: We literally gave our KBS and CBS pours to other tables after we bought some other BK beers because we were so disappointed--we'd shared our beers with each other to make sure there wasn't any variation between each of our CBS pours. The KBS and CBS were slightly different but honestly not enough for me to feel like the hype was anywhere near justifiable. I've never been a huge fan of KBS so that's probably another part of it. And the last part, as mentioned earlier, is maybe my palate wasn't as developed and practiced in the bourbon barrel-aged or maple sub-styles as it is now.

I really liked Cobra, but I got very little if any maple out of it. And Black Maple, honestly, I don't get any at all. Never have. It's so powerfully bourbon forward I almost hardly get any actual stout characteristics even. I've gotten the character of maple from many other bourbon barrel aged beers that actually didn't even use maple, with a deft use of the barrels, but not in CBS or Frootwood, and barely in Project Pam, which outwardly advertise the maple element.

The maple I've gotten in FB's French Toast was really intense, almost cloyingly artificial seeming. The maple in MBCP and Morning Wood was quite prominent and seemed more natural, but less so in Wide Awake for whatever reason. Coffee Fayston might be my second favorite of the maple stout 'sub-style' but the base stout needed to stand up more. The most intense and delicious and natural seeming maple I've had in a beer would be Mornin' Delight, but they reduce their family's maple syrup in a smoker to an extremely viscous level, allowing it to also absorb the smoke. And the base beer is nicely rich and roasty as well.

All of this basically shows we're mostly comparing beers with added maple or maple flavoring, to a beer aged in maple bourbon barrels. For a more apt comparison, Michigan Maple Jesus was a very nice balance, and I found it to be very pleasing, not overpowering or underwhelming.

However, as a side note, pretty much every other beer I've had that's brewed with maple has had the yeast pretty much tear the maple a new one, converting those sugars to alcohol moreso than permitting their natural flavor to come out.

What kept going thru my mind: so much beer, so much adrenaline and so little time!

I suppose that, when you get that excited for something you've never had, it's easy (for me) to be let down.

According to my sales rep, our particular county will receive ~1/3 of the amount of cases of CBS that we got of KBS. 130 vs. 350+ I believe.

If that carries down to the store level, then a local store here will get 25+ cases! They sold a truckload of surplus FBS at $20/case in summer 2016 so they got the largest allocation of KBS in the state this past spring. They've also been stocking and selling a lot of other Founders. Hopefully their portion carries over to CBS.
