Interesting, my stone growler does not have the pasadena address on the bottle even though that's where it was filled. Is this Stone trying to champion dissent against the annoying CA law or just them filling growlers as fast as possible for a release of Enjoy By? Laziness or a political stance?

Growler law = more profits for Stone via glassware sales. I don't think they'd take a stance to oppose that law.

So they openly break a law? You err on the side of laziness.

Actually, I don't know the law other than hearsay, anyone have a link to CA growler laws?

they arent brewing on site there... so its not really breaking the law. the beer is made in escondido and i bet its another extension of the brewery license. which apparently the state hasnt been too keen on

Loaded question. No they don't break the law, hence, they also can't openly break the law. Your response seems to indicate you asked a question you were already set in your ways of believing to have possessed the answer to.

I highly doubt that. There's around 40 hearsay exceptions, a continual evolution of what constitutes out of court declarations for the truth of the matter asserted and whether they are testimonial or not, often dependent upon the many jurisdictions. Even the most learned masters of evidence will disagree about what is or is not hearsay.

If it were a political stance, who that matters would ever notice this detail?

Doubtful that any breweries get money for selling growlers. Talk to commercial brewers yourself and find out what they want. Most will say they'd be happy to fill a universal growler. Paying an extra $5-10 for a new growler (not at Port) is a bit of a turn-off for your average beer consumer.

I am pretty sure he was saying he doesn't know the law outside of what other people tell him, not that he's an expert on hearsay.

Wulp, that is possible, maybe they had a case of "bad glass" they hauled up from home base?

The license for the Pasadena location is a Ca. ABC Type 01 - BEER MANUFACTURER. What most folks do in this situation is install a small pilot system and then brew the minimum amount (per Quarter, I believe) in order to satisfy the state requirements of said 'Manufacturers License'.

The odds are very good that you are correct in assuming the beer is produced in Escondido in my opinion

In addition, Stone is seldom lazy when it comes to following the letter of the law...in fact, they generally err on the side of caution in such matters

OK, to rephrase, I do not know the letter of the law for EtOH growler fills in CA. My impression from what people tell me is that you can only fill growlers at a location if the address of the location filling is on the glass you are trying to fill (AKA "good glass" as @Kotayk would say). If Stone Pasadena is filling with a Stone Escondido growler (AKA "bad glass"), is that legal? If yes, is it legal because it is a satellite of the mother brewery (similar to @pinkgrenade's comment)?

Moreover, I would believe that the craft beer movement can be a boiler room for a change in CA growler law. Oregon, for example, will fill containers of all sorts and typically people can use a universal growler (@MrClean). I am an avid craft beer drinker, as I assume you all are, and I have a shelf in my garage dedicated to "good glass" that I have to tote around CA when I am traveling. I don't believe this is a logical regulation, or for that matter, a green regulation. I also don't believe that companies like Stone are making their bread and butter by charging for growlers (again @MrClean) just so they can fill them for unassuming customers. For a majority of breweries, I fundamentally believe that they just want us to enjoy their beer.

Here are some other thoughts: (1) What is the profit margin on an empty growler? (2) What is the total cash flow for a company like Stone from the sale of an empty growler?

Thanks all for the enjoyable feedback, but rest assured, I would prefer this be a constructive forum.

I agree, they probably have little incentive to break CA regulation.

no matter how much markup goes in to a growler, its not like they charge you for a new glass every time. im not sure why people are obsessed with the idea that breweries make TONS of money from these and love selling their own growlers. people bring their growlers back. over and over and overrrrrrrr again. its just a one time purchase. the money is made in the beer folks!
