Jewel or Marianos should have regular, maybe some barleywine. I suggest BeerMenu's app to see if any local mom and pop shops might have it around.

Scarcity mostly. I’m guessing they made 100x more props than Hennas.

(Inb4 bbbut secondary market value- People routinely pay more than things are valued.)

In my opinion, the way to solve a lot of the problems at LP Binnys is to have employee staff involved A LOT earlier than they are currently. Right now you have prople lining up the day before yet the staff doesn't start handing out tickets until 8am, that's at least 12 hours for line shenanigans to happen. It sucks for the employee who gets stuck doing this, but there needs to be someone handing out tickets much sooner (but obviously not at an announced time, since then there would be a lot of line cutting right before everyone knew the employee was making their rounds).

This could also help guide the line into something that makes more sense than whatever the hell happened this year.

Whole Foods in the 'burbs have had variants in the past. I got prop and coffee at the Deerfield locations last year.

I agree the poor LP experience this year is pretty much all on Binny's, but to be fair it didn't appear they were doing anything that different from years past. However, it seems they were more than a little cocky about their ability to handle the bigger crowd they invited with the advertised allocation and vintage bottles. That, combined with decent weather (no rain, mild temps) and word of mouth about the fast-growing line created the "perfect storm". Reports about how "easy" past years have been probably didn't help, either. I can't imagine how much it sucked to be #1500 in line, but Binny's was very clear about how much they had available at LP and once tickets were gone those who chose to wait were maybe a bit too optimistic.

It seems like there were a decent amount of other options (other Binny's, Jewel, etc.) for those who saw or heard about the line and decided to try their luck elsewhere. Had I stuck to my original plan from early last week (Jewel --> small Binny's, followed by a couple scattered stores) I probably would have gotten about 1.5x as much as I did at LP where I spent 14 hours I'll never get back. But that's the price I paid for wanting to ensure I got at least one of each variant and the multiples of coffee I wanted so badly. Since I do this pretty much solo, with no mules to rely on, I selfishly think having GI be the sole source would probably hurt more than it helps.

If they're anything like me, they don't care as much about absolute rarity as they do getting the beer they want. I'd gladly give up a BCS Coffee bottle for a slightly more common beer that I missed out on, for example. You've got generous dudes/dudettes on this forum that are literally giving their beer away, so it's not crazy to think that not every trader is trying to milk every last ounce out of each trade.

Roughly 6:30 - 7 AM. I was maybe 10th in line, IIRC. The WF blog did say that they don't know allocations and if suburban locations will get variants this year, but I think that's the usual disclaimer.

In the past few years, Deerfield and Glenview/Northbrook have both had variants. Those are the only locations I've tried.

At least! They gave out no less than 2,000 at Prop Day and at Binny's LP.

    @SeanBond fair enough

@Bryan71 that's what i'm figuring. there will be so many chances to drink prop on tap, and many more chances to make a trade for years to come on prop 17 bottled. especially with more riding the post-fobab wave it makes zero sense to me that people would want to get rid of either henna.

Why have the line at all, except for the spectacle? They could release it in a number of different ways.

Presell allotment tickets at all Binnys equally prior to Black Friday and allocate evenly. That would give locals the leg up since out of towners would not make two trips.

    Ticket the release on line.

Release the different variants on different dates.

    Produce more

Other breweries have figured all this out. I know it is “tradition” to release it this way but isn’t it time to look at things differently?

Yep. Pricy pours. Prop was $16 and Coffee $15. Loved Prop. Hated coffee.

I don't get why people are pinning this so much on Binny's. I view this is a Goose Island event, and Binny's is really just a middleman. It seems like they should both be held accountable, and I'd say moreso GI than Binny's.

I also agree it'd be great if GI just did this all at their barrel house, but then how will all the retailers and distributors feel about getting shut out? That could hurt the sales of their other beers, which I'm guessing are more profitable than this once per year release. Of course, they could still keep stuff going to retail, but just cut the allocation to LP Binny's by about 75% and have that portion handled at their barrel house.

Mine bought in upstate NY were bottled in July, don't remember ever seeing that early of a bottling. Is that odd? Also 14.7%.

In my opinion it's because prop is a better beer. I've had all 3 on tap and bottle. Maybe it's just me, but I don't get the henna craze. So for me, I'd rather have bottles of prop.

One simple change that would allow for keeping the "event" nature of the Binny's LP release is to do away with predetermined allocations and do what @Vav did when he was the beer manager, namely, get a count at around 8/8:30am and use it to determine how many item choices each customer will get (Binny's would probably have to limit doubling up to some extent, i.e., no, bro, you can't use every one of your X selections on Prop). This way there's still an incentive to line up early, albeit hopefully less enough of an incentive such that people aren't camping out 12+ hours ahead of time, but everybody gets the chance at the same number of bottles. Obviously you'd need either more than 4 POS or significantly more coordination by Binny's employees taking "orders" and constructing the allocations in this case because they would not be pre-set.

I think this, and having simple, clear, and most importantly enforced rules for what it means to be in line would solve virtually all of the problems people have mentioned. This is not complicated. Here's a simple, clear rule suggestion: no cutting whatsoever (obviously), and you may not leave the line and rejoin it in your same spot for any reason other than a bathroom break of reasonable duration. Any violator is kicked to the back of the line.

Untappd rating is definitely higher on the Prop. And Henna isn't BA either. I, personally, am more interested in how great a beer tastes vs the level of scarcity.

That said, I get the whole supply/demand argument too.
