it really all depends on how much you're willing to spend. As long as hops are correctly sealed they can be stored for a long while. So yeah, galaxy costs more because of trademark and transport, but if you have a heavy hitter budget you can bulk purchase enough to last you 2 years or so... I have a bag of 2015 mosaic in the cooler unopened, and no one will be able to tell the difference.

You raise a good point and therein lies a big issue with smaller breweries trying to develop regular "flagship" beers. That being said, I think that in order to have long term success you need to hone in your better beers and develops something that consumers can rely on.

Maybe switching up yeast strains was a good thing for HB - it seems like they've had some serious issues with their yeast strains in the past.

Galaxy Bowl uses Conan. No idea if that's the one, but that's what's in GB.

the irony is that, if they DID brew the beer consistently, they could maintain it as a house strain and then it would be less expensive than other strains. pay some guy 20 an hour to wear a lab coat, drink beer and harvest yeast. Hell, I'd do it hmu

its a wild saccaromyces strain. Mike was getting it from Imperial Yeast out of Oregon. For special sauce he'd blend its with another conan like yeast. That was the special sauce formula. He also made a few of my favorite beers with only that wild sacc strain. The Lunches Brunches Interiews being my favorite.

Imperial Yeast has actually taken what Mike did and created a new sku that is a blend of Citrus and Conan. If youre a home brewer and want some, its called the A24 Dry Hop blend

not b1, from my understanding. Batch one was something else and it under attenuated, thats why the second batch was so dry. It was an overcompensation to make sure that mistake didn't happen the second time around

That's definitely possible; I only know GB uses it now. If it was something different the first time, clearly we need to track that yeast down!

On a home brew scale, Omega DIPA (Conan) and Wyeast London Ale 3 cost the same. Galaxy and Nelson cost about $1 more an ounce than Citra and Mosaic.

    Co-signed x a million.

That first batch of Galaxy Bowl is the best "NE IPA" Chicago has produced, in my humble, undoubtedly flawed opinion.

This...my wife and I maintain that thought as well. I still think about that beer every couple of weeks when I try a new NEIPA from Chicago as the comparison goes to that beer. Funny part is that we had that beer without much experience to the style and it was a complete game changer for us.

Has anyone asked Hop Butcher why they haven't been able to duplicate the original Galaxy Bowl? Based on the comments I have sadness over missing out on it.

Given comments I've read from the HB guys, my impression was that the issues with the initial batch caused them to try a recipe that was a little more stable. Whether this means using a different yeast or just following a slightly different brewing process, I'm not sure.

I'm hopeful that now that they've got their past inconsistency issues fixed up, we'll get more top-notch GB in the near(er) future.

Yea, I believe they changed the yeast in between the two.

I need to get the special pricing you're getting for hops. Galaxy is $7/lb more than Citra at Yakima Valley.

When was that pic of Green taken in your avatar? It looks nothing like what people have come to expect a NEIPA to look like...
I can tell from the sticker that it’s awhile ago

You might have misread my post. For home brew prices it's $16 more a pound ($1 more an ounce x 16 ounces)

Didn't see any sort of recap posts, so just curious what your top 5 for 2017 were.

    18th St/Mikkeller - Trub Wizard
    Dryhop - Victorian Flavour
    Marz - Crushed Velvet
    Forbidden Root - Snoochie Boochie
    Mikerphone - Poetic Hustler

My top 5 were NEIPAs from Corridor. Unfortunately I can't tell you which ones because I don't remember since something like Van Hazen was awesome, but Van Hazen 2 and 3 weren't, but then 4 was, but then 5 wasn't, etc. etc. Cosmic Juicebox 2 was great, one wasnt. 1st batch Squeezit was great. The Reign in Punch was great. There were some other notables, but given the vast difference in batch I just gave up remembering their names from shame- kind of like why did I think overly baggy jeans were cool at one point?

Question for the in-town folks...I'm heading down to Revolution Saturday morning and will likely swing by some others (Corridor, Half Acre, etc.) I'd like to grab a bunch of NEIPA's (More, NW, Marz, FR etc.). Are they readily available in liquor stores (Beer Temple / Binny's) or will I likely have to hit up the breweries? Thanks!
