    Permanently? That didn’t last long.

This doesn't surprise me in the least. From what I've been hearing for awhile their sales where really pour, and they had a lot of debt from building the brewery. That sounds like a losing combo to me. Hopefully, John is able to continue with the brewpub in New Brighton.

Will the Edina people accept the neck beard? That's the million dollar question? lol

I don't ever like to see breweries close. Why would anybody "like" this?

Kind of sucks because I liked getting Old 8 porter (and Dark Knight and Dark Knight Returns) locally. However, I rather driver to New Brighton vs New Richmond.

I am guessing they had their reasons, but fuck New Richmond. Only saving grace to there is 45th Parrellel.

I think they ‘liked’ that message not because they are happy to see Barley Johns closed but because they appreciate the poster providing useful info.

    Exactly!

Some people probably should stick to less complicated forms of communication.

Personally, I never thought their beers were good enough to warrant a larger production brewery. Three or four visits to their pub, and I left completely underwhelmed each time.

So does this end their canning distribution? Was really taking a shine to the Wild Rice Wild Brunette and their maibock and Ofest were great in cans.

I don't see how it couldn't end their distribution.

If Barley Johns is saddled with a lot of debt, I imagine the brewpub existence is in a perilous position. I did not buy a lot of their cans. I did like the porter and IPA but never saw a can of Dark Knight in my area. Also heard from a couple of bar owners that the only kegs they could get from Barley Johns was the Wild Rice Brunette so they fell off their radar really quick. Just too much competition for tap lines.

I enjoy some of their beers, purchased cans a few times. Hope the brewpub stays around though.

This is sad to hear and hopefully not something we see more of from places that built for the future. Liqour stores are ultimately where places the scale of Barley John's production facility make their money, and liqour stores are sick of getting burned with cases of unsold local stuff. I've personally seen the change from buyers in the last 4 years. The "give me all you got! This stuff sells like hotcakes!"to "yeah, we will take a case.... Maybe... My shelves have aaaalot of craft beer on them these days..." Moving volume is a pretty hard thing to do and make money doing.

In other incredibly shitty beer news, Oakhold will not be opening. I don’t know what the circumstances are, but it’s a huge loss for Minnesota beer.
