I work at Duke and I've always wondered: Do they start selling beer at 7am? It might be nice to go in the morning when it's not packed out at 5pm.

I have been at 8:30-ish AM before a charity walk on the Duke campus a year or two ago and they definitely sold beer-to-go (I did not attempt to get any draft beer so not sure if they would be ready to do that).

Yeah, to echo what the folks have said, it will be more than worthwhile for a trip over to Kinston from New Bern. It'll be around a 35-40 minute drive, so doable for an afternoon/evening visit. Mother Earth doesn't have any whalez, but they do have a couple of solid every-day offerings. I think their Oatmeal IPA is really solid. In addition, Chef & the Farmer is one of the best in the state, so well worth a visit for that place alone (might want to go ahead and try to get a reservation, just in case).

If you don't mind making a drive, there are a couple of breweries in Wilmington, NC that would be worth a visit. It'll be around 2 hrs to go from New Bern to the ILM, but New Anthem and Wilmington Brewing have both been making pretty solid beers. New Anthem's NE-Style IPAs are best on the coast and WBC is close behind. There's also beach stuff to do around, I guess. Eat at Flaming Amy's if go visit.

The vibe at Mother Earth really killed my experience there, I know that sounds petty but it felt like I walked into the set of an Austin Powers film. Beer was good though.

The Erwin Rd location now has 42 taps, so the other location no longer has it beat in that department.

I just want to make sure I'm reading correctly: you can get a tap of beer at a liquor store, or is it only for growler fills?

I'm not really sure what you are asking or which post you are referring to, but in NC, packaged beer and liquor can't be sold under the same roof. Only in bars that sell it only by the serving can they be sold together. Packaged liquor has to be sold at gubment liquor stores. You can't buy it at grocery stores, beer stores, etc.

I just see that the store has 42 taps. Just wondering how that works, since we don't have taps in liquor stores in Minnesota.

Quik Shop isn't a liquor store. It's a bottle shop that has taps and sells gas.

You can have a pint/glass on premise or get a growler fill at some bottle shops in NC - depending on the license they have (Sam's allows for on-premise consumption as well as packaged offerings).

Bottle shops are not liquor stores in NC. They sell beer, cider and maybe some wine. They are allowed to serve drafts and that is why many have a bunch of taps. They can also fill and sell crowlers/growlers of the beer they have on tap too.

I would second hitting Glass Jug since it is close to your hotel. Where are you staying? I work close by Glass Jug and Barrel Culture. Maybe we can meet for a beer or two. Cheers!

Ok, that's where my confusion is. Thanks everyone for clearing it up. I'm used to beer and hard liquor under one roof, but there's no growler fills/taps in the stores.

Mother Earth and the Chef & the Farmer are across the street from my loft. I have yet to try Chef & the farmer. I stop by ME once a week for a refill. The Oatmeal IPA is great seasonal beer geared towards people who aren't huge IPA fans, it has a nice grape fruit aroma but doesn't taste like a traditional IPA. Dark Cloud is a good year round beer. My favorites are the Tripe Over Head and the Windowpane series: Chocolate Porter. Both are seasonal and can be hard to find.

I am here in NC, and am enjoying it a lot. I thank you all for your recommendations so far. I have been to Barrel Culture, and the Glass Jug so far. Barrel Culture knocked it out of the park. The Glass Jug had an Irish Stout of their own on tap. Not bad.

Also, just a heads up: The Glass Jug had some Maine Brewing beers on the shelf Thursday evening.

Thank you all for your advice so far.

I am finally back home from your great state. I want to thank you all for all of your great advice. I didn't actually get to too many other breweries after Thursday. I did get to Beer Army and BrUtopia in New Bern, but that was it. I did consume many beers from places you all recommended, and I was pleased.

I can't wait to get back, maybe next year.

    Thank you all once again.

I drove over to Beer Army this past weekend. I thought it was a partial bottle shop, I was told they stopped selling bottles and replaced that area with a gift/souvenir shop. I bought a few beers from Bruin which is pretty close to Beer Army. I need to visit Brutopia.
