My step-dad (not a big beer drinker) has had a 6-pack of Guinness cans in our basement for about 3 years now and I'm wondering if anyone has ever "aged" Guinness, on purpose or accidentally. Also if you've never done this, what is your opinion on how it will taste? Thanks for any info

    Cheers!

Pretty sure it'll taste like Guinness.

    Just a guess.

Worst case scenario it may have developed some flavor.

Not that it's "unsafe," but I voted no because of a +/-3 year old Guiness can from my grandmother's fridge last thanksgiving that almost made me vomit... just a heads up.

I was honestly thinking about it, especially since it's st. patty's day/weekend. I'll try one tonight and let you know how it is.

I remember splitting a six'er of the 250th anniversary stout about 3 years ago with some friends. Hmmmm, I wonder if the bottle I stashed away was full or empty....

    Voted safe to drink.

I'm excited/anxious to try this. I'm hoping it doesn't get me sick to my stomach... but it'll be interesting see the difference. I'm going to get a fresh Guinness after work so I can compare the two.

Guinness isn't bottle conditioned so I'm guessing if anything its gone downhill. Possibly some oxidation and carbonation loss. It would be a cool experiment to see how the nitrogenated widget bottles/cans age though. There is no way it would make you sick though.

I actually picked up a case of Nitro cans not that long ago. Maybe I'll keep one to the side for just that.
I don't see the bottle being a good idea though for the very same reason...but hey, I'm always down for an experiment. Look forward to your reading your out come.

The nitro aspect certainly does put an interesting spin on aging potential. Color me curious.

Anecdote: I've had a couple bottles of the Guinness Silver Jubilee 1977 within the past year and each time it's been absolutely awesome. Still maintained a bit of carbonation and was rich and almost smokey...slightly oxidized, but in a good way. Obviously, this isn't the same recipe that we're discussing here, but it's worth mentioning.

These are the nitro cans I believe. I know they're at least cans.

I've had year-old Guinness widget cans before that spent the whole duration within a refrigerator...medically drinkable but they tasted very different - in a bad way - from a "fresh" can...and I dearly love Guinness. A 4% beer stored for 3 years = garbage IMO

I'm expecting the same but hoping i'm wrong.

If it sucks, wait until well into St. Patrick's day and sell the cans for $2 a pop. Boom, you just made $10 and the people who bought the cans will be so drunk that they won't notice the nasty taste.

everyone knows guinness is just dirty river water anyway. chances are all the sediment has settled to the bottom, and it'll be like drinking fresh irish spring water...

seriously, i used to love guiness. then left hand milk stout and milk stout nitro became my go to stouts. i had a guinness the other night and it was like drinking water. i never thought i'd feel that way about guinness. ex-girlfriends maybe, but not guinness.
