I have often wondered how many breweries named Hofbräu there are. I know of 3.

IIRC, Faust in Miltenberg was named Löwenbräu at one time.

I'd forgotten that. Probably others around as well. Another one with multiples (at least in Franconia) is Drei Kronen...

Yeah, but Hofbräuhaus is more a title than trademark, per se. Like State House or Library. The founding fathers of a new village plan out spots for the Cathedral, Village hall... now, where shall we put the Hofbräuhaus? Gotta have a spot for that.

Anyone know of any German websites that have a beer festival calendar? Thanks in advance.

Well you do have to have a Hof (court) before you can have a Hofbräu. That always confused me a bit about Bamberg's former Hofbräu brewery: they never had a court in the traditional sense. Turns out, after the Bavarian takeover Prince Rupprecht took up residence in the Residence and allowed Simon Lessing's Frankenbräu to change its name to Bamberger Hofbräu. More info here.

I think I read somewhere that the Bamberger Hofbräu used to supply a lot of beer to the US army in Bamberg, quite convenient as it would have been just across the road from the former Warner Barracks.

I’ve passed that AOK building so many times without knowing it was built on the site of a former brewery.

I know, but the founding fathers in my story were impatient. Having a Hofbräu guaranteed a Hof -- beer before bureaucracy.

I dumped that page into a spreadsheet and counted 11. There were also a couple called Löwen without the bräu.

Really? Interesting. Wonder what the difference is -- just that, being "different?"

One of the others I looked up was a similar establishment (Gasthaus Bräuerei), so I wonder if it's just another sort of trademark to add on a business. I know the lion is a big symbol throughout Germany.

    Update:

We are all booked for Annafest Forchheim. It took a hell of a lot of emailing but eventually we managed to secure a hotel in the centre of town at a decent €60 a night rate. Flights at £60 and crucially train from where we live to Manchester instead of the 4 hour drive and we are good to go. Even managed to get 1st class return train for the same price as the flights basically so job done.

Just got to count down the days until Friday 20th July now!!

Thanks for all the help folks.
