    What a waste of mosaic.

I always cry alittle when these regional to large scale breweries use up the citra, and simcoe and it never really hits your palate the right way. Then I hear about these smaller breweries who don’t have access to these hops who’d know how to actually use them. /end rant.

Is it safe to say you are not a fan of Loral hops?

    Would you please relate why?

    Cheers!

I hope the Stone layoffs included whoever over-contracted for all those Loral hops.

loral hops aside, I will be trying this beer. Hopefully the Mosaic hops dominate, and I'm curious to see if Stone can even make a NEIPA. May be in the minority here, but I'm hopeful about this beer!

I'm not a fan of Loral hops either Jack. I don't hate them, but they're not my favorite. I like them better than Belma though. I think part of the reason for that might be that to a certain extent we've become jaded, and we seek explosively flavored hops with Citra being perhaps the best example. I can even see a little bit of myself in that, but at the same time I'm old school and I grew up on more subtle hops like East Kent Goldings, Hallertauer, and Cluster. Just a thought.

Another though is that perhaps they just haven't been using them to their best potential. Perhaps they haven't found the best hops to pair them with. I know it's hard to think that Stone, king of hops, wouldn't nail it but maybe they didn't - hopefully, until now!

Jim, is there a flavor that they provide that you dislike? Is there some other reason you are not a fan?
Have you personally tasted any of the Stone beers that 'featured' Loral hops? Were those beers unpleasant for you?

    Cheers!

Interesting distribution map for this beer: basically east of the Mississippi plus a few states. Only Washington and Nevada in the west (NOT California!).

I got a lot of lemon flavors when I tried their last Loral forward beer. I get that lemons are a tropical 'fruit' and some would describe as citrusy. But for me, loral should almost never be used in a NE style IPA. I don't think of lemons when I think of the heavy NE and mid Atlantic hitters, I just don't. I think they over bought and are literally tossing us a lemon.

Re the map: maybe it's Only being brewed in VA?

Doesn't seem to be any shortage of Mosaic out here. Everybody seems to cranking out Mosaic beers. Even smaller breweries who haven't quite figured out how to use them.

From the description for Stone ///Fear.Movie.Lions :

“Overall this unfiltered double IPA is juiced up with massive tropical & citrus notes”.

I take it you are not a fan of “citrus notes”?

    Cheers!

As regards the distribution of this beer. Maybe this beer is only being brewed at the East Coast (RVA) brewery and this is impacting how Stone decided to distribute this beer?

I've tasted the following Stone beers with Loral hops and included my scores for you as well:
    Ghost Hammer 4.2
    Exalted IPA 3.95
    Loral & Rudi's Adventure 4.14

...so, no, those beers were certainly not unpleasant to me (although I am rating very much to style and lesser so to personal hedonistic tastes). Clearly I'm not against Loral hops, I just don't find them that exciting. They're floral, fruity, earthy, and peppery - and the fruitiness includes citrus but also apple/pear and some dark fruit. What I think it comes down to is that they're a little muddy to begin with, with a lot going on but without anything really popping unless you get a little too much of that pepper. I'm sure they've got a use, but I'm not sure how I would use them myself as I can't figure out what other hop I would pair them with to bring something exciting out of them. But, as noted earlier, I like them better than Belma which seem muddied and boring to me.

I'm always a little confused by this. Aren't all citrus fruits tropical to begin with? I'd love to have a separation though where "tropical" includes pineapple, mango, papaya, guava, passionfruit, melon, etc. but not citrus - that would make it easier to write reviews.

Jim, FWIW that is how I make a distinction when I discuss beers:
    • Tropical = pineapple, mango, papaya,...
    • Citrus = Grapefruit, Orange, Lemon,...
I typically prefer to just use the general terms of "tropical fruit" and "citrus" vs. calling out individual fruits.

    Cheers!
