It's funny. but in reviewing beers, writing jokes, stories, poems and such, I never really try to do anything particular. Once I start it either works or it doesn't, any time of day. Trying to be funny is like trying not to be overweight. It just sorta is.....

I like a good clinical review, à la @superspak. But @RaulMondesi's reviews are a hoot. Frankly, I enjoy both types and pretty much everything in between. YMMV.

I will henceforth use panache in every beer review I write.

    Panache or quiche.

THIS guy can write a review!

"Beautiful textures like Princess Jasmine weaving a pair of silk skivvies. "

    Poetry!! Haha!

Based on what I've read on the internet over the years this advice is either lost upon or ignored by some folks.

Perhaps Mark Twain really meant, "Write what you think you know, want to believe, or have been trained to believe". This is Pavlovian Twainism.

Just as a baseline, I would wish that any review would be a good honest appraisal, and that I might have trust in the reviewer, or to believe that he/she might be a decent judge of beers. As far as language and entertainment go, I think it is imperative that if one thinks to embellish, elaborate, postulate, entertain, inform, or otherwise be a positive force for furthering info about beer, I'm all in. Humor leavens all of the edges.

I really prefer beer reviews to be informative, rather than funny/poetic.

I just try to describe my perception of the beer as I'm drinking it. My reviews tend to be intentionally short since I find I seldom finish reading long, verbose reviews.

Agree to disagree, and honestly there will be hundreds of reviews for that information regardless. I just would hope a couple charismatic and funny reviews would be sprinkled in-between the facts.

On a. Side note, if a review is too over the top , it could get deleted, and then the time spent reviewing is lost.

Identifying subtle flavors/tastes isn’t a laughable ability. I’ve expanded my own beer vocabulary and appreciation quite a lot by reading reviews by tasters who can name things I couldn’t quite put my finger on. The worst, though, is when someone nails something really unsavory, like a “vomit” smell in kettle sours. Now I feel like that’s all I smell when I drink one. :confounded:

Personally I like humor in reviews and I’m surprised, OP that you haven’t read many that did?

Whether the BA loved his beer or loathed it it’s always a blast to read about a thousand letter review followed by the conclusion - “Don’t buy this crap”.

Or describing a super Stout from Founders someone come up with a witty and funny three liners review getting about ~50 likes from the community over the years.

“Likes” while silly and facebookish to some are an indication whether we like it or not as to how awesome a review is. Doesn’t need to be a masturbatory 5,000 characters one.
