I guess they're just throwing stuff at the wall, and seeing what sticks. Who isn't though? Other breweries are throwing single beers at the wall; Inbound is throwing full brand lines. My opinion is that they should concentrate more on improving the quality of their beers than creating new brands.

Or, perhaps there was another article in the works to spell out the F-Town portion of the story: http://www.startribune.com/firehous...lted-on-loan-for-faribault-brewery/494866041/

I'm thinking the StarTrib was tipped or received feedback from those effected by the F-Town loan after the article was run. It was bad journalism to miss it the first time - no way it should have been a two part story.

Nice work by reporter Emma Nelson on the follow-up regardless; this is the most detail I've seen on the matter to date. There are interesting stories behind many local businesses that deserve more than puff piece previews, especially when public funding is involved. Also, there's a lot of economically questionable projects that gain public funding seemingly based more on the political connections (or at least strategic political butt-kissing) of the owners/developers than the public-good merits or commercial viability of the plans themselves ("crony capitalism"). I can't say for sure that's happening in this case, but it's common, and the details here make it seem like a contender. I'm not suggesting formal corruption, more informal capitalization on friendly relationships and networking opportunities as well as past and expected future political support that ideally shouldn't matter when public funds are at stake. That's a general public policy problem that extends well beyond the world of beer, but, as seen in the cynicism-inducing though ultimately successful fight for Sunday Sales, beer-related issues can expose broader, systemic political process problems to an otherwise largely inattentive public. I contend that certain St. Paul officials have some more explaining to do in this case, but at least they were asked.

Added: On the other hand, there's Hanlon's razor: "Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity."

    From the 2nd Strib article:

“Interest is accruing, but while [Temke] is structuring the financing for the St. Paul project — with the intent of making the EDA whole as part of that — we would not put his loan in a default status or do anything to negatively impact his project,” she said.

How is this different from using one credit card to pay off another?

At face value, this sounds like even more tax-payer money down the drain to a smooth talker.

You know, if he just made good beer but sucked at the business side some of this could be overlooked or forgiven. I'm surprised he hasn't even tried to open a brewery in Ogdenville, Broadway, or North Haverbrook yet.

Here's hoping that they get their beers on tap at Border View, because I'm there 3 times a year. Also would be interested in seeing them at Oak Island Resort in the Angle.

I bet if enough requests for it come to the resorts from folks like you it could happen!

Vine Park is contract brewing Tyga Bite at Barley John’s now according to the Facebooks. It will be interesting to see how that project will evolve.

Anyone know any more about Cedar Island Breweing in Albertville? Haven't seen anything mentioned about them since August of last year. Kind of assuming things fizzled out..

Lake of the Woods Brewing to open Minnesota brewery

Lake of the Woods Brewing Co. today announced they are expanding to Warround, Minnesota in the United States with a new brewery set to open in Spring 2019.

First opened in June 2013, Lake of the Woods Brewing has begun construction at 112 Main Avenue Northeast in downtown Warroad inside the town’s old fire hall – about 220+km from the Kenora brewery. It will be Minnesota’s northernmost brewery.

“We want to service the lake and the lake is touched and surrounded by Minnesota, Manitoba and Ontario,” says Taras Manzie, President & CEO. “That’s sort of our wheelhouse. That’s our backyard. That’s where we’ll play and operate and work to develop communities.”

“We are so excited to be bringing the Lake of the Woods Brewing Company history, brand and quality craft beer to Minnesota,” adds Eric Nerland, President of the new US division.

Lake of the Woods occupies parts of the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Manitoba and the U.S. state of Minnesota. The lake is over 110km long and wide, and contains more than 14,522 islands and 105,000 km of shoreline.

Numerous Ontario craft brewers are now exporting beer to the United States, but Lake of the Woods Brewing is the first to build a brewery.

It was talked about 5 posts ago. So excited, and I hope that they get their beer at Border View Lodge, and at the resorts in the Angle.
