Recently a few unexpected encounters at wine tasting events led to tasting of Belgian gueuze and US sour beers. Instantly I became hooked on those type of funky and fruited sour beers. Gradually I started searching for more and had the chance to taste numerous sour beers, including Cantillon (fav was Fou Foune and Saint Lamvinus), Three Fonteinen (regular Geuze is pretty good already), and many US sours (e.g. Upright, De Garde, Floodland, Holly Mountain, Rare Barrel, The Lost Abbey (Duck Duck Gueuze). I have also searched high and low for some local BC sour beers and often became quite disappointed when they were tried side by side with the US or Belgian sour beers…until NOW!

I can now proudly say that Vancouver finally has a few breweries that make mouth-watering sour beer packed with long-lasting aroma and concentrated fruits.

In Vancouver, my favourites are the:

    1) Temporal Artisan Ales (located at the Luppolo brewery) – their apricot beers (Floating in Place and Noyaux Tarte) are deliciously addictive. Haven’t tried all of their 2018 member only beers yet, but I know I won’t be disappointed.

    2) Luppolo Brewery – Rosalba (raspberry) with slight funk, jammy sweetness of cherry and red fruits, and long finish of creamy cherry soda. Great acidity and lovely aroma.

    3) Strange Fellows – I love the fact that they have a different style of sours (not just barel aged beers), as well as non-sour type of beers for members to enjoy. Great quality beer and super fun tasting room.

I am wondering if others have found sour beers that they feel can stand up to other sour beers across the world. I would also love to hear from other sour beer lovers what their experience with sour is like and their passion with sour beer.

Anyone from Lower Mainland interested in getting together for sour beer meetup at breweries?

Nothing compares to good lambic, but I’ve had good wild beers from Canada. I’ve liked some of the Four Winds stuff as well as Moon Under Water out your way. In Ontario, Half Hours on Earth does a good job, Bellwoods, Burdock, and the newer guys, Small Pony are all solid.

I have wanted to try some of the East coast sours too! Still trying to find an excuse to make my way over there. Ones you listed are definitely on my list to try! If only beers can be shipped across the Provincial border...

    Thanks for the suggestions!!

yep definitely noone here ships beer over provincial borders... wink wink, nudge nudge, say no more!! If you have access to bottles of some of the stuff you noted above, you should have no problem setting up a trade for some ontario/quebec goodies.

If you're interested in brewing the stuff yourself, highly recommend to check out VanBrewers if you haven't already. Quite a few homebrewers playing around on the funky side of things

Lost Nation Brewing’s Gose, plan (no added fruit), sea salt and coriander. Refreshing and sour.

Two Berliner Weisse from Down the Road Beer Co., Feyborn Berliner Weisse Cranberry and Strawberry Rhubarb Feyborn. Both highly enjoyable, the strawberry-rhubarb had a funky reddish-brown color but was still exceptional.

I have some Berliner Weisse from White Birch Brewing, plan-no fruit, looking forward to having a plan one.

That's a great tip! I have only thought about brewing myself very recently and this is exactly what I need! Talk to others about their experiences. Thanks for the tip!!

BC also has some Berliner too (e.g. Strange Fellows). While I can't say that I am too excited about, I do enjoy the slight funk and earthy aroma. Need to try out the wines you recommended!
