Hey all, I'm curious as to how long everyone generally sips on a beer? I know it probably varies greatly on style and abv so feel free to list examples! I've read on here before that some spend an entire evening on 2 beers and others have a couple bombers in a couple hours.

For me I would drink a lager or wit somewhat faster than an ipa depending on bitterness. A double ipa I tend to sip a little more however sometimes if its particularly tasty I sip them faster than I probably should :stuck_out_tongue:

The point when I start to really slow down is when the abv increases by more than 8.5. Also I think most stouts and imperial stouts I also slow down way more than any other beer. The only style that I tend to drink not paying attention at all to abv is sours for me. They are so delicious to me I find it hard to not take another immediate sip! Mouthfeel and taste dictate how fast a favorite beer goes for me the most.

10 minutes to half hour per 12 0z, depending on style and mood.

Precisely long enough for me to finish it

22 minutes. I know this because I derive a great deal of joy out of drinking good beer while watching my favorite Premier League team, and match after match, I've nailed it down to 22 minutes per beer.

PS: Any other time, who the hell knows, but I imagine it's close to the 20-25 minute mark.

Depends on the style for me. Lagers, wits, and other more mild, refreshing beers, I tend to drink pretty fast. Stronger beers, whether it be in taste or alcohol, I tend to drink slower. I also tend to start out faster and slow down as I drink more.

No "generally" for me, but there are some that usually hold true.

"Lawnmower beers" - typically something light after a hot bike ride - not much more than 10-15 minutes.
Stouts like SN Stout or FBS - anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour, depending on starting temp, mood, etc.
Something like Bourbon County Stout or KBS: 60-90 minutes for a single 12 ounce bottle.

Is it really possible to sip beer? If so I suck at it.

As you said, it depends on the beer and its style. Something lighter such as an APA or hefeweizen, it would be about 15 minutes. A big beer such as a BA stout or barleywine could take up to 90 minutes, for 12 oz. Give me a bomber and it could stretch over 2 hours.

Refreshing beers after a long day - about 2 minutes for the first one, maybe 30 minutes for the 2nd - usually a pils or IPA.
If I'm popping a barleywine or imperial stout to sip & enjoy it can last a couple of hours
PS Cool website - I just returned from Vancouver. Really enjoyed Yaletown & Central City

Also depends on the situation. Oddly enough, I find I drink much faster at tastings with other people, because usually I'm so excited to get to the next brew that I turn into a kid at Disney World and burn out trying to do everything too fast. If I'm sipping one at home, usually takes about half an hour at least if it's a tasting one (where warmth isn't detrimental) or about ten minutes if it's just a bottle of beer. I've found I've slowed down a great deal in the last few years.

Depends on the style. Imperial stouts, strong ales, and barleywines probably average about an hour and a half per 12oz serving. Maltier, but lower in ABV styles like scotch ales or brown ales probably average about an hour. Hoppier styles probably average about half an hour.

Pretty impressive that you can keep beer in the glass that long without drinking it. You are like a Zen master or something.

I have no freaking idea how to answer this. Two minutes to about an hour and a half. One of my favorite things is to sit around with a bomber watching TV or a movie and sip then refill that sip for a couple of hours. Another favorite activity is to swing by a bar for just an hour. I tend to get carried away if I stay too long, so its nice to set limits. I usually manage to have 2 or 3 before I walk home.

Lighter styles about 15-20 min. per 12 once serving. Imperial 12 oz. probably around 30 min. Imperial bomber around 60-90 min. If I'm reviewing something even longer or if I'm served something too cold I let it warm up a bit.

I'm probably somewhere in the same ballpark. Certain beers (low abv that I've had before) I can go through in 15 minutes. But the majority of the time I take my time to review and enjoy. I'm sipping on a 2012 Old Stock now which will probably take me an hour-ish
