Just had one, seems the ones in distro were canned at start of June. Was definitely enjoyable, though it doesn't hold up as well as SoS or Zombie Dust.

Super crushable, low bitterness, nice tangerine and kiwi with a really tasty sweet malt backbone. Excellent mouth feel too. But all pretty muted.

If we could get this at like ~6 weeks I'd be very happy.

Anyone have a local suggestion for a really solid local Pale Ale or <8% IPA? Not really interested in pine/resin forward, much prefer citrus/tropical dominant (any bitterness). Hop Nation was a decent reccy before.

Fresh Fixation always works for me. The Squish is great for something more fruit forward.

Garage Project are doing a monthly Fresh IPA at the moment. The first three months have all been really good.

I am perhaps more a traditionalist than many on this forum, but drink a mix of craft/traditional. The only real division with beer is - good beer/bad beer, and I've not had too many of the latter. Some recent beers - Pauvel Kwak, Lord Nelson Dark Ale, O'Hara's Irish Stout, Old Milwaukee, Belhaven Scottish Ale, Pikes Pilsener, Carlsberg Elephant Beer.

A roughly equal mix of Feral WarHog, Thornbridge Jaipur (now also in cans) and Sierra Nevada Resilience Butte County Proud IPA. Complexity in a bucket.

Various other things too, obviously. Still drinking the Oud Beersel Faro bag-in-box lambic opened 3 weeks ago. It really keeps fine and has now cleared - next time I will keep it still a week after opening it before pouring. Really liked Mountain Goat's Hello Humanoid - tasty, hoppy and witty.

It's hazy fever here in NZ, almost every brewery putting out an acceptable to pretty good hazy IPA. Problem is as they are near-identical, there is really no reason for so many.

It appears some of my stock of 2011 Golden Blend are basically turning to Golden Doesjel, pretty disappointing :9

..and on a lighter note - how is everybody doing?

    Good mate, how are you?

I'm booked in to GBW again this year so looking forward to that. Also did well with the latest Cantillon drop so it's been a good few months on the beer front.

New brewpub in Margaret River called Wild Hop. Incredible set up. Beers are really clean but not overly complex or have huge depth of flavour. Nothing wrong with that though. Really approachable beers.

I noticed that one of their upcoming tap beers is a BA Imperial Stout. Was hoping it would come online when I was there.

Had a 2015 Girardin OG and 2015 Cantillon Gueuze side-by-side last night.

Never hard Girardin before but I now understand why people rate this beer so highly. As soon as it started to be poured a wall of aroma hit me with a heap of funkiness, damp hay, subtle lemon and a good hit of oak. Palate was complex with deep funk, light acidity and lemon, plenty of oak. Flavours were intense but delicate if that makes sense. Stunning beer!

The Cantillon was similar to the Girardin but pared back a bit. More lemon in the aroma. Palate was more acidic, light oak and more lemon. It was less complex but still delicious.

Good to hear you're doing well mate. It's always so strange coming back to these forums and the "craft beer" (is it even called that anymore? haha) arena. What did we see for the Loon arrivals this go 'round? If I recall correctly it was pretty depressing for quite a while, self-importing was just so much better heh.

Always love seeing someone experience the magic of a classic Girardin 1882 Black Label (I'm assuming it was black label); I always, even now, make sure I have a few standard 3F OGs, Girardin Blacks, and Oud Beersel Oude Kriek Vieille stocked somewhere deep in the house haha. Good too hear there's still activity (I mean, of course there is, but you know what I mean).

Latest Loon drop was OG, RdG, Kriek, Lam, Vig and Nath.

The Girardin was Black label. So damn good.

What in the world is Cantillon Nath? I've been gone too damn long. Also, I love seeing official Vig imports again, looks like a pretty good lineup overall.

So...is Nath good? I may need to reach out and see if I can find some if yes haha.

Just drinking the Otherside Imperial Harvest...really tasty beer but I don't think it's actually a wet hop beer. Pretty keen to try more stuff from this brewery.

Also had the 3 Ravens Blueberry Coffee Milkshake IPA which was surprisingly really good.

Had a 6 year old Cantillon Iris lately that was tasting great, very bright, complex and Orval-esque without being overbearing.

Had a terrible bottle of Tilquin Oude Mure which had almost no character.

In January I was in Palo Alto/San Fran (San Fran for about 3 hours) and managed to hit up Toronado and Mikkeller Bar. Toronado was a little bit disappointing, tried Blind Pig and you can get better IPAs here, probably the best beer I had there was Barebottle Mosaic Kush. I found Mikkeller Bar's beer menu kinda disappointing, had a vintage of Big Bad Baptist and a mediocre Russian River Pale Ale (Dribble Belt) there. Kind of wish I'd gone to City Beer Store instead, didn't even realise they had their own taps.

Apart from that the best beer I had over there was Ballast Point High West Victory At Sea, that bourbon spice tastes amazing with that coffee and vanilla.

I'm generally getting pretty over sours these days, there's only so much you can do with them.

Nath is rhubarb. It was their Zwanze beer a few year back. The 2017 needs some time I think. Was very "zoo-like". 2018 is stunning imo. Poured with a light pink hue. Good balance of rhubarb (which is almost non-existent in the 2017), acidity and funk. Stunning beer imo. Worth a look if you get a chance.

Oddly, this is in (some) Dan Murphy's. I like the normal version better - I just found this one a bit much.

Heard this a few times, always with "surprisingly" - which is encouraging. Is it still around?

A few recent local drops for me: both Bad Shepherd Alkonost and Batch Tank6 are more than solid imperial stouts. Foreigner's Silent Hunter is the most convincingly Czech pils I've had from a local brewer. White Rabbit's Le Rameau D'Or has a little more presence than their beers often do whilst maintaining refinement and balance - a good new beer at GABS.

Lion Stout. Yeah sure its not been aged in barrels enfused with urine collected from Elvis Presley's last visit to the toilet. But fkn hell its a bloody good stout

[IMG] 10 years old. It does have a small amount of oxidisation and the dreaded soy sauce, but overall still drinking extremely well. I do have a 1983 version of this beer but it will remain unopened forever

Agree, love Lion Stout. Nothing complicated or crafty just 8.8% abv and great flavor. If you like Lion you will probably also like Angkor Stout only 8% but otherwise similar, not sure if it's coincidence or that they are both from south east Asia.

Hey I like seeing more posts here =D

I'll just give my thoughts on two recent brews I had in these winter months.

First, 2018 Parabola 350mL (or was it 375mL? whatever); this was so incredibly disappointing - which seems unusual since I usually enjoy Firestone Walker and Parabola is generally highly regarded. I just found it had an awful appearance (no matter what I tried), an awfully subdued nose for what it is, and mostly oakey-barrel and some smokey ash as the overbearing flavour. I had two different bottles but got the same result. Perhaps I'm crazy? Has anyone had a great time with these recent Parabs?

The other brew was the mini-bottles of CBS from Founders. First off, insanely well priced for how much I loved these monsters. Absolutely the best looking stout I've poured, and it stayed around forever. Intense maple pleasant charred barrel on the nose, with an excellent roasted coffee backbone doing the heavy lifting. Punches yiou right away with this super unique charr/sweet bourbon mix that just works - it's brilliant and punchy. There's quite a bit of bitterness that fades after a dozen seconds or so which mellows to a soft roasted coffee. The finish is very long but it's awfully subtle and welcome.

Oh also, this is stupidly drinkable, the mouthfeel on this thing is near-perfect so be careful. Buy a case...or ten.

I didn't have a whole Parabola, but although I liked it I can see what you mean. It's certainly one where the spirit and charred wood drive the show and the stout is a supporting player. And it is rather thin.

CBS I liked a whole lot more than I expected. I didn't love KBS but found the way the sappiness of the maple in CBS rather than its sweetness brought things together really compelling. Just a surprising way to bring drinkability and balance to something so rich. And it's one of those that's gone from I'll-probably-never-try to still hanging around.
