I would like that beer... Martha and I went to Chapel Hill yesterday for a combo birthday (mine) and Mothers;s Day brunch at our daughters home. Our son Will was there, and the grandchildren and everyone was lucky for the day.. I saw the wave cloud gliding up high with its fingers, crossing the mountains, moving east always presaging a big change. When we got home we suddenly had two inches of rain fall in about twenty minutes.

    New Beer Sunday: German Doppelbock

Evenin’ NBSers with a heads up for fans of German lager biers.

This evening’s new beer is the Bell’s Consecrator, a nice beer for sipping while watching a “do or die” basketball game.

My review, in progress, can be found here:

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/287/2732/?ba=drtth#review

The aromas/flavors are everything you’d expect in a doppelbock. There’s toasted brown bread, some caramel and some dark stone fruits. The background has just enough earthy herbal bitterness to keep the sweetness from cloying and to provide that light touch of dry bitterness that fades in the back of the palate. An enjoyable, drinkable dopplebock which I’d be having again fairly often except for the fact that the Troeg’s Trogenator is available here as a year round beer. So for me this is a "once in a while, change of pace" beer.

Since tonight is game 7 of 76ers-Raptors match up no music on the player.

    Cheers, all!

That must be @bstoos . I use newspaper for all my wrapping, from mystery beers to gifts. The last tenants here still pay for the paper, so why shouldn't I use it?

    Sounds like a delightful brew!

@Coronaeus sent more beer last week, still have a number to clear out. Fantastic American Barleywine. Great rocky head retention/dense foamy lacing. Aromas and flavors of big tangerine, red grapefruit, lemon, raisin, peach, plum, pear, pineapple, apricot, mango, melon, red apple, citrus peel/rind, peppercorn, and pine hops; with moderate caramel, brown sugar, toffee, toasted biscuit, brown bread dough/crust, and light nutty/roasted malts; with herbal, floral, woody, grassy hops; and yeast earthiness. Light-moderate pine, citrus peel/rind, herbal, floral, woody, grassy, peppery, light roasted bitterness on the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; very creamy, silky, bready malts; some sticky hops and resins/rinds in the mouthfeel. Light-moderate increasing resin dryness, no hop astringency. Dangerously smooth, not overly aggressive, minimal warming 9.5%. Wow, really killer stuff. Very similar to Bigfoot, but less aggressively resinous/drying. Feels like Columbus, Centennial, and Amarillo. Super juicy and fairly dank/earthy hops; with balanced fruity yeast, and rich dark/bready malts. Not overly sweet/heavy from lingering resin dryness. Amazing style example. 4.25

Coincidentally I purchased and drank through a fresh sixer of the old version, then had the new version on draft at a Victory brewpub without even realizing it (but did notice that it tasted differently) and then purchased a sixer of the new version and I liked the new version better. Nothing against the old version and it's a classic but I just found this new version to be more interesting because it is better balanced and now hits all of the right Pilsner notes for me.

    @JackHorzempa great review as always!

Really sweet. Big notes of the sugars in the syrup. The peanuts are definitely present in the stout and add another layer of complexity to this one.

The disappointment is the lack of coffee. I think chocolate peanut stout is a more appropriate name

    Hello New Beer Sunday!!!

Stress, a topic I know way too much about, owning, and operating a restaurant. My situation it just builds and builds, due to me having very little time away from there. It causes me to have insomnia, and it also really makes the arthritis in my back that much worse, which repeats the cycle. There's other issues with the business, and issues with the landlord - who makes Congress look fiscally responsible, but I won't go into them.

One thing that is keeping me going now - the fact that when the lease is up, next year, I'm DONE! I'm getting the hell out, and moving on with my life. That keeps me going. Another thing that has kept me going this past week - I get tomorrow and Tuesday off! I can do whatever the heck I want for a change. Holy crap! I'll be grilling tomorrow. I love to grill, and I'll be going hog wild with a couple racks of ribs on the grill. That will be a blast.

Will there be a beer run after my chiropractor appointment Tuesday? We'll see.

Now, another stress reliever, new beer.

New Belgium Oakspire Bourbon Barrel Ale. 9% ABV.

This is a good and tasty beer, but it's nothing that really wows me. New Belgium just for some reason doesn't inspire me, except for the 1554. This beer is good, but nothing that's special.

Pours a reddish brown color. 1 finger off white head, with the retention being ok, but not too long. There's just a slight bit of lacing on the glass.
The nose is, well, not too strong, and I've had it sitting out of the fridge in the bottle for a while, so it should closer to room temp. I do just get a faint hint of the barrel.
Taste - Well, I get a bit of fruit in this beer, maybe cherries. Some vanilla.
Lighter bodied than I was expecting. There's a nice pop in my throat from the carbonation.
It's an ok beer, but nothing that knocks it out of the park. Nothing wrong with it, but nothing inspiring, either.

I do have one more new beer in my fridge (besides the ones I'm saving for fishing trips), I may pop open that one next. We'll see how this one sits.

One more new beer tonight - this one is from TrimTab in Birmingham. I have been really impressed with their beers lately, and this one does not disappoint, despite being six weeks old:

    look: 4.25 | smell: 4.5 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4.5 | overall: 4.25

Can was dated 3/22/19. A very hazy bright yellow color with a thick white head that stuck around for a while. Despite the age, the aroma was expressed right out of the can on the pour, with tropical notes, pineapple, and dank resin. The taste followed nicely. Lots of fruit up front - pineapple, mango, grapefruit, tangerine - but balanced with an earthy resin. The body was a bit heavier than medium, but the malt was there and in check with a nice dry finish. Bitterness was soft as expected. Overall simply outstanding, hitting all the notes for me!

16oz can poured into a snifer glass. Dark black color with a finger and a half of kahki colored head that lingers. 4.25
Smells of milk chocolate, toffee, milk sugar, caramel, and dark fruit like rasins. Roast and some coffee notes from the malts as well. 4.5
The taste is roast upfront, with bitter chocolate, caramel and brown sugar. Some molasses As the beer warms some fruit like raisins and figs come into play in the finish. 4.5
The feel is my favorite part of this beer. Silky smooth and easy to drink. Like all Kane stouts it's thick and coats the whole mouth. Light-Medium carbonation and medium body. This is an absoultely fantastic stout. So much complexity and flavors with no adjuncts added, or any time spent in a barrel. 4.5 for a BA generated 4.49/5

A Flossmoor Station BBA stout. #2 from them for me, only had Wooden Hell otherwise. 2017 vintage. This was fantastic. Lasting rocky head retention/thick foamy lacing. Aromas and flavors of huge milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, molasses, vanilla, toffee, bourbon, coconut, toasted oak, licorice, raisin, prune, fig, cherry, date, roasted nuts, biscuit, and dark bread/crust; with lighter notes of smoke, charcoal, leather, tobacco, herbal, grass, pepper, and yeast earthiness. Slight booze in the aromas as it warms. Light-moderate herbal, floral, grassy, peppery, roast, char bitterness; and bourbon/oak tannin spiciness on the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; very creamy, silky, velvety malts; some sticky hops, chalky roast, and bourbon/oak tannins in the mouthfeel. Lightly increasing hop/char and bourbon/oak tannin dryness; no cloying, acrid, astringent. Dangerously smooth, mild increasing warmth of 8.6% and barrel booze. Fantastic balance of rich dark/black/roast/bready malts, fruity yeast, and bourbon barrel presence/integration; with solid earthy hop presence/balance. Light residual sweetness with lingering bitter/tannic dryness. Feels like an English styled Russian Imperial Stout all the way through. Spot on stuff. 4.23

Ok, beer #2, and the last one for tonight. Oh, the joys of being a lightweight. It's also the last new beer that I don't have reserved for fishing trips. Don't despair - I'll be headed up to Lake of the Woods next Sunday, and will be doing NBS at Border View Lodge. I think I know what it will be.

I do know what this beer is, and I'm digging it a lot, because it's making me think of summer.

    Golden Road Brewing Mango Cart.

This beer does inspire me a lot more than the last one. It's nice and summer tasting. Nice mango aroma. The taste is a bit weaker, but still damn tasty.

I could see pounding them on a hot summer day, with a cute, middle aged single gal. Ok, maybe I shouldn't get into fantasy there, but, whatever.

Pours a nice golden color. Somewhat creamy looking. Not too clear, but not very hazy. 2 finger white head, with some lacing as it dissipates. The retention is moderate.
The nose is, well, mango. Deep, rich mango aroma. It doesn't smell artificial at all. Just a slight hint of a wheat aroma.
The taste is mango, but a whole lot less than the nose was letting on. There's a nice wheat - banana flavor on the backside, which compliments this beer quite well.
The body is lighter, as expected. There's a crispness to this beer, along with just a bit of carbonation.
On a hot, sunny, summer day, this beer would be dam amazing. While it's not too hot today, or sunny at the moment, it's a good summer beer, and could be very easy to pound down in the summer sun.

Ok, that is it for tonight. I'll see you all from Baudette next Sunday.

    Cheers!

Fairly clear body, golden; frothy, sticky head; globs of foam adhering to the glass. Herbal and piney aroma; old orange fruit. Juicy flavor with a citrus component; strong hop bitterness; some bread-like cereal grain notes. Medium-heavy body; crisp and prickly on the palate; semi-dry overall.

This beer delivers a well-rounded American IPA experience. Nicely balanced and decently complex, cruising through with a nice light malt grain base and a bold hop bitterness and fruity aroma. A well-done collaborative effort.

It's been a decent and quiet day. A little bit of yard work was done, then some time spent in the Fortress of Solitude listening to Classical Guitar Alive! and The Thomas Jefferson Hour plus some jazz from my personal collection. Then Mrs. Goot and Rocket and I enjoyed some take-out from a local BBQ joint. And, now -- well, it's basically mindless TV and web surfing until beddy-bye time. We live an exciting life...

Hi everybody! It's not every Sunday that I'm drinking a double-digit beer at going-on 10pm, but today is assuredly one of those days. I'm in the mood for celebrating, because tomorrow is my older son's college commencement ceremony. In some ways, boy, it seems like time has flown; yet in other ones, he seems to have matured so dramatically that it could have been 10 years.

Here's a beer that I've been waiting for just the right time to open-
    [IMG]
Mai-O-Maibock by KC Bier Co, an amber doppelbock clocking in at 10% abv. Big thanks to @Harrison8 for sending it my way.

The initial aroma is dominated by malt, as one would expect. I'm getting a nice toasty bread crust undercurrent, alongside white raisin, sweet spice (vanilla, anise, mostly), toffee/nougat, and a touch of warming alcohol. The palate is rounded and rich, dominated by the nougat and white raisiny qualities. Is it the beer, or do I just have candy bars on the brain? It's definitely a beer that's on the sweet side. Not obnoxiously, however, and there is a decent enough hit of bitterness to provide enough balance. Again, that slight warming sensation of warming alcohol on the finish, gentle and not out of place.

Overall, I'm digging it. I'd prefer more depth and breadiness, but this beer plays its hand well by navigating those dessert-like qualities instead. A great choice for this dreary and chilly spring day, too. A- (4.1), and a good job by KC Bier Co. Cheers, NBS!
