In Munich, all the beer gardens and beer places will be open. Only the stores and maybe some museums will be closed. If you are out in the countryside, you may see smaller places go on a Betriebsferien (Vacation break for the whole operation) during Pentecost since the kids will be off from school.

This is pretty late notice, but this is not something I had on my radar at all since it's not really something that interests me personally. However you might be interested to know that there's currently a small beer festival along the Rhine, just behind the Dom that focuses on both German and international beer. There's no entry fee, it's basically just a bunch of stalls and seating along the river. I only just noticed this today as I was passing by there on my bike earlier.

It's not all that interesting, to be honest, mostly macro stuff, but since you're probably in the Altsstadt anyway and the weather is great, I thought I'd mention it. Might be worth a quick stroll if you're in the area.

+1 to this for a day trip. I grew up in Wiesbaden and will be there in a few weeks. Plenty of good food and drink options.

I think we walked through a few times actually today already! We are having a blast hitting up all the various places for Kolsch!

Ah, great, I just thought it might not be too obvious since it's a little further away from the main Altstadt hub and behind the bridge. Andechs and Augustiner might be worth checking out, but then again you're headed to Bavaria afterwards anyway .

So yesterday was our first full day here in Germany, spent in Cologne. Hopped place to place, enjoying the beautiful Kolsch offered here of course. Did not disappoint!! As far as a favorite so far, might give the edge to Paffgen perhaps. Just seemed to have the extra little complexity going on in there.

Peters was most unique with a heavier Vienna malt character I think, nuttier note. Really enjoyed them all, though.

Also stopped at Delerium and enjoyed a Rauchbier on draft. Cool spot!

    Our stops so far:
    Fruh
    Peters
    Gaffel
    Paffgen
    Gilden

Can't wait to stop at more tonight after the park. Any must do Kolsch spots we should not miss? Or how about best food as well? Ate at Peters and Gaffel yesterday and both were fantastic. Love the white asparagus in season currently!

For food I would recommend Lommerzheim, their pork chops are especially famous and they serve Päffgen as well. It's quite a rustic, typically "kölsch" kind of place that is quite popular with locals and tourists alike. Usually gets rather packed later in the evening though.

I would have recommended Braustelle even more, both for the food and beer, but unfortunately they are closed on Mondays. MIght be something to keep in mind for a return to Cologne though, if you don't mind venturing out a little further.

Malzmühle is pretty much a must-visit that's right on the edge ofthe Altstadt and if you're finally sick of Kölsch afterwards, Craftbeer Corner Coeln, who currently have a bunch of Warpigs brews on tap, is just a 3-minute walk away .

Reissdorf should also be worth a visit, it's a little further out as well, but really not much. I've never really been to the brewhouse, but Reissdorf always used to be my favorite Kölsch back when I still drank the stuff.

If you'd prefer to stay around the Altstadt, there's also Sünner and Sion still around, although they are probably not the highest-rated places, they are probably still worth a visit if you're in the area anyway.

we do all our booking via DB especially when in Bavaria. Our go-to is the Bavaria Ticket, esp. as we are a group of 3 or 4. Good for virtually all transit in Bavaria after 9a, but excludes the high-speed intercity trains. Stop over in Nuremberg for a couple of nights and do a day trip to Bamberg (45-60 minutes by train). Then take a bus (using your Bayern Ticket) from Bamberg train station to within a few blocks of Klosterbräu and walk yourself pubbing back to the train station. Nuremberg also has some good brew pubs and wirst houses. 2nd class train ticket is fine, no seat reservations needed during non-rush hours.

Great monastery beer, biergarten and beer halls inside. The indoor food halls are a series of ala carte specialty stands,,, pretzel one, sausage one, salad one and so on. The bier I call giddybier.

Shame you won't have more time at Weihenstephaner. It really begs a few hours of drinking and eating, not to mention the first class brewing tour. For future reference, we have stayed at an inn with bus stop from the main station and a half mile walk to the brewery complex, quiet outside of town. A transfer at the Freising station to another bus to the Munich airport.

Back in Frankfurt on the way south to Rust. Cologne was a blast, we loved it! Was able to stop in Dusseldorf today for a few hours and hit up a few Alt breweries. Dusseldorf was nice, but we preferred Cologne better for sure (as well as the Kolsch). A mix of atmosphere and the people overall made Cologne a bit more enjoyable.

Next stop, beer wise, will be Munich!

So we are headed for Bamberg now (with a stop at Weihenstephaner on the way) . Munich was just awesome! Both mornings we enjoyed weisswurst and Bier at Schneiderweiss. Hit up so many breweries I couldn't list them right now if I tried. Augustiner and Ayinger were highlights, various locations. Hofbräukeller was awesome. Enjoying the Helles out of the cask has been incredible. Just a really great time all around. Paulaner (the big, fancy location) was a top spot as well, really great food too. Went both days!

I'll have a detailed report once back home, but so far this trip has been so incredible. Some good and bad points I'll share later about my thoughts on Germany beer and its culture as a whole from my perspective, but that comes later!

Can't wait to get some Rauchbier in my veins!!

I’m looking forward to the report.

I’m heading over to Berchtesgaden tomorrow, will visit their Hofbrauhaus, the legendary Augustiner in Salzburg and finish my trip staying at the Erding Brewery hotel in Erding so I’m going to be sampling some good stuff I’m sure.

Arrived here at around 5pm and blown away by the beauty of Bamberg. First up, Schlenkerla! Enjoyed a Krausen and Marzen before headed to Mahrs Bräu to try the U (was OK). Headed to Keesmann for their Herrin Pils (incredible..).
Thennnn Spezial for their incredible Rauchbier lager which honestly puts up stiff competition for Schlenkerla! So good. Followed that up with a Keller Bier there before heading back to Schlenkerla for one last Marzen and dinner.

Today, we head to Weyermann for a tour. Then of course, plenty more stops!
