There are so many breweries now - it's amazing! And I'm not just talking about the U.S., this is happening all over the globe. With this many breweries it almost seems like we're running out of good names. What are some stupid names, great names, or names that you might use if you opened up a brewery.

    I'll start:
stupid: Captured By Porches in OR. Maybe I'm just missing the connection.
great: BrewDog from Scotland. You might not like them, but the name let's you know what they're all about.
whadda ya got: I was going to name my brewery Gargoyle Brewing Co. if I could ever get it off the ground. Then Stone showed up. Greg told me I could still use the name years ago but that was then and this is now.

    Stupid: Hoof Hearted
Great: AleSmith, just like the master craftsmen back in the day (blacksmith, silversmith), but for beer.

I like it when the name comes from the history of the area/land they located on.

Stupid: I agree with @ericwo with the Hoof Hearted name (juvenile minds at work created that?), but I also think that BAD Brewing and Mediocre Brewing, both of which came up a few days ago in a different, unrelated thread, are a bad to mediocre gamble upon opening your brewery's doors for the first time.

Great: Bell's, just because the quality of the beer and the organization has to translate to the name.

Mine: For some unexplained reason I've always thought it would be Red Rooster Brewing if I ever opened the doors to my brewery. I'm not going to do so, thus the name is available if you want to take it (upon legal due diligence by you first, and then a glass of your first beer).

Trouble brewing (aka Walmart brewing): clever name, bad beer

Local to me, I like Traffic (soon to open) and Rip Rap, both pretty much 2 things associated with Hampton Roads.

I could never understand how all those 'wide open beaver' places could acquire that much funding to even open up for business. And there are more than one (!).

Yea came here to say this. Without question the dumbest name in my opinion. I'm sure it was funny for the first few days, but now they are stuck with it....

    Another demerit for Hoof Hearted.

Can't think of any terrible or great ones around me, but most local/regional places around here have geographical or area related names.

Worst: Hoof Hearted, 3 Floyds, Belching Beaver, Flying Dog, Societe, Hardywood, Newport Storm

Best: Thirsty Dog, Commonwealth, Allagash, Lost Abbey, Modern Times, Great Lakes, Russian River, Magnolia

Worst of the Worst: The whole port/pizza port/hop concept mess

Also, is Horus Aged Ales and Horus fresh the same guy but Fresh ales is gypsy brewed?

Really anything that is confusingly close and not explained on the label is awful

I must be the only 52 year old with a juvenile sense of humor, but I love the Hoof Hearted name. Probably helps that I have a 12 year old girl who's not in training to be a proper lady.

Bad: Belching Beaver, Saucy Brew Works, any brewery with Dog in it. Because there’s a fuckin million of them.

Good: Pipeworks, Alpine, Stone, 3 Floyds, Seventh Son, Rhinegeist

Best: Side Project, Bottle Logic, Grimm, Evil Twin and The Answer just off the top of my head.
Worst: took me AGES to realize what Hood Hearted actually meant, but yeah, crap name. Brewery X is pretty bad too. West Coast Beersmiths from Gothenburg just sounds too contrived.
My own brewery would be called JamFuel Brewing Co. Obviously.

Rip Rap is cool, better ring to it than say Pembroke. But, Jefferson Labs would be a decent name..

MillerCoors is a shitty name. Hate that one. Same with Anheuser-Busch InBev SA/NV.

I love ska music but think ska brewing is a horrible name.

I Really like simple names based on the owner's last name or the geographic location.

This is totally going over my head, but what does Hoof Hearted mean?

I’m pretty sure I brought this up in the Pacific forum, but we have some breweries with really generic names out here in which I have no idea why people thought they’d be good brewery names.

Bland: State, Stereo, Garage, Local Craft Beer (seriously, that’s one), Also, a friend of mine in Virginia works at AleWerks (how generic is that)?

Definitely not a fan of breweries with the word “hop” in their names either. Pretty lame. It just seems dumb/lazy. I have a restaurant by my house called Gourmet Burger. Umm, ok. So creative! Maybe I should open a brewery called Good Beer. Oh wait, we already have that out here...

Worst of the worst: No joke. There is a brewery here in OC called Black Cock. I cannot make that up.
