I was recently gifted a westy 12 dated 2013. Is it safe to drink ? And how should it be stored? Definitely tons of dead yeast I can see . Any advice helps!

    cheers

Definitely not safe. For proper, environmentally sound disposal, please forward it to me at the following address....

Go ahead and enjoy it, won't make you sick at all. Not sure I would age it anymore so pop it for the holidays and see what you think.

If you don't want to drink the yeast just decant slowly and leave the dregs in the bottle

A 2013 is going to be awesome right now. I love the 12 up to 8 years or so. Definitely store upright and let it sit like that for a few days before pouring. As @unlikelyspiderperson said, pour slowly and stop with about a cm left in the bottle. When you crack it, give your impressions in the cellar review thread. Enjoy!

Is a 2013 date (will be European format ie. DD.MM.YY) what's stamped on the cap? Because they are dated 3 years out - so that would be a 2010 bottle if so.

Yes, it's the best before date that's stamped on the cap, so a DD.MM.13 stamp will indicate a 2010 production bottle.

I tend to enjoy Westy on the older side. I did a vertical recently with "fresh," 3 year, 5 year and 8 year beer. We all enjoyed the 8 year old XII the best. I'm not sure how much longer it will develop, but if cellared properly these beers continue to develop with time.
