Anyone know if they will put the Munich Gold in cans?

    B. United was shipping Mai-Ur-Bock cans when the shipping to NYS thing started but they said the cans were from the fall so I didn’t pull the trigger. I’ve never had it.

Will they be shipping their Dunkel over as well in these new bottles? I’ve had it on draft over here and it was delicious.

Munich Dark is depicted as being draft only on the website:

That’s a shame. I’m always a champion for Dunkel’s popularity here. So far the only Dunkels I’ve seen that sell in packages seem to be HB and Ayinger. Wish we could get more fresh stuff over here!

You and I have discussed this topic in the past.

Have you had the chance to purchase Hofbrauhaus Freising Dunkel yet? If so, was it fresh?

When I desire a Dunkel I am very happy to drink Von Trapp Dunkel which is now available to me in cans.

    Prost!

I don't think the provincial brands have had much luck getting towards my way, I haven't seen it but I know you've enjoyed it.

Von Trapp Dunkel is okay. I like it, but to me, it's still not a Dunkel. Similar to Yeehaw Dunkel, which I've had a few of as well. These beers are too roasty for what I know is a German Dunkel - although from what I've studied over there, provincial varieties have more roast than urban varieties in Munich and Vienna.

I suspect a lot of these American brewers fall prey to what I call "Porter Culture," where they assume a dark-color beer must be roasty. I don't know what kind of malts they use, but I really suggest these places hold off on chocolate and black malts. The only American-brewed brown lager which I think is worthy of being called Dunkel is Jack's Abby Red Tape. Devil's Backbone Vienna Lager also comes close to the profile I tend to seek out as well.

The HB Freising is the best bottled one, imo, but getting harder to find.

Even harder is the Traunsteiner on draught, although it is simply amazing. (And that was in normal times so those days may be gone anyway)

But Von Trapp makes a very good one, too. And it happens to be the one in my fridge at the moment :sunglasses:.

Yeah, I tend to think of the Von Trapp as more of a rural landbier type rather than Munich Dunkel.

Having more imported bottled Dunkels and "getting more fresh stuff" are completely at odds with each other in this case.

In the parlance of Emeril Lagasse: BAM!

This beer is imported to the US by Shelton Brothers but since it is indeed roasty perhaps it would be best for you to just 'move along'.

    More bottles for me!

I've never seen it but a beer called "Death Punch" in German interests me. Schwarzbier, in my mind, can be roasty - I do enjoy a good Köstritzer when I can find it!

Oh, perhaps I misunderstood? You enjoy Dark Lagers that have some roastiness to them? Your 'issue' here is Dunkel having some roast qualities?

    Cheers!

Yes exactly, I don’t think roastiness belongs in most Dunkel lagers, but can exist in Schwarzbier or other styles. I also am a big fan of Rauchbier, so I’d be hypocritical saying that kind of flavor doesn’t belong in lager at all! It just comes down to what I expect out of a style - I like Dunkel because I like a specific flavor out of them exemplified by the Munich breweries.

I am understanding you now, I think.

Luckily for me I can enjoy Von Trapp Dunkel because it is a well brewed, tasty beer. No 'hang ups' for me here.

    Cheers!

You're quite correct. From BJCP for Munich Dunkel:

Right, but just putting Dunkel on the label doesn't necessarily mean that the beer is in the Munich style. The first time I had Von Trapp's I was reminded more of the Flensburger Dunkel than anything else. But either way, they're just using the term in a broader sense and make no claim regarding Munich or its beers, so I don't really see the guidelines as all that applicable.

Flensburg tasted more like a Schwarzbier to me. My pointing out the BJCP info was supporting Munich Dunkel as not being roasty -- it's not, at least in those I've enjoyed in Southern Germany.

Try Weltenburger's Dunkel if you can find it, about as close to what I had in Bavaria as I can find.
