I found it at Liquor Barrel Golden Valley. Awesome beer. I'm a relative newbie to craft beers, but I've never experienced a beer like this, the prefect blend between two of my three favorite things, beer and whiskey. Does it have to cost so much?
Welcome to BA, and the craft beer world! You will find that there are lots of breweries who barrel-age certain beers. Although a variety of used/new barrels are used, the most common approach is whiskey/bourbon barrel aging. It's a very popular style, and one that usually comes with higher pricing and frequently disappears from shelves quickly due to supply/demand. The Rye Wyne pricing is right in line with what you can typically expect to pay for high quality takes on the style, although there are some exceptions which are more reasonably priced (Central Waters Bourbon Barrel Barleywine and Bourbon Barrel Stout top the "reasonably priced" list).
Drinking this right now as I bought 2 bottles, one for myself & one for my best friend in Iowa. Really glad I cracked it open to taste how truly wonderful it is. IMO this can go 10 rounds with Boulevard's BBQ or Rye on Rye. I love both of those. This just hits the nail on the head in all aspects for me!
Is there a 2012 version out right now? I have two 2011 Rye Wynes that I keep meaning to drink but never get around to. Would like to drink side by side impossible.
Think of it this way - if it wasn't so expensive, guys like me would have bought so many bottles that you wouldn't have got a bottle . I love that stuff but the price limits my purchases. Unfortunately, high quality beer is made with high quality ingredients which comes with high quality prices.
*Edit* Meant to say I was drinking the Bourbon Barrel Quad....silly me....I did enjoy the Rye Wyne as well. These guys are doing real good things. Here's hoping 2013 is great for them as well.
Haha, I almost responded and said the Quad was very good and reminiscent of BBQ, while I haven't had the Rye Wyne yet
The Rye Wyne is great. I've had a few bottles, and have picked up a few more as I see them, since I know it won't be around forever.
They actually released another batch of the Rye Wyne right around darkness day. It was aging the same time as the 'quad' and they let people try samples from the barrels at Brau Fest. It is a little different than the original as they only used first runnings for the second batch- the beer turned out much better IMO. However, I'm not sure if there is a way to distinguish between the batches- I don't think there is any kind of date coding or difference in the packaging.
IIRC correctly there's a 2011 on the Rye Wyne label, but I could be wrong. Was the other batch bottled or just for the fest?
This stuff is good... Its a little hot, so if you aren't a fan of rye whiskey you probably won't like it.... I really like imperial ales aged in whiskey barrels. Great brewery
