Is it me or did Negra Modelo disappear?

Ok, then maybe it is me, but the old Negra Modelo (yellow label) tasted slightly sweet, and had a more roasted taste from the dark malt. The Modelo Nigra (black label) tasted sour and weak. I'm also not a fan of regular Modelo either. In the interim I'm drinking Dos Equis Amber with tonight's dinner, a botana (layered tortilla chips, seasoned ground beef, refried beans, cheddar and Jack cheeses, baked, and topped with salsa, and sour cream), but it's just not the same.

Yes, it's probably corn. Thanks for the bad news.

According to the European label it's rice. Corona Extra lists both corn and rice (in that order).

Reis=rice. Sometimes breweries write out the full ingredients in only one language, the Swedish ingredients list might only list barley malt while more ingredients are listed in a different language, in this case in German. One can also see the use of papain, ascorbic acid, caramel color E150 and a stabilizer E405.

Interesting. That is not the Modelo Negra (or Corona) brand brewed at the Constellation Brands' Mexican breweries and sold in the US market, so the ingredients might be different. (I can't make it out from the partial label - is that brewed in AB-InBev Grupo Modelo breweries or at another of ABI breweries?).

In the US, a Puerto Rican company, Ballester Hermanos, Inc still imports the AB-InBev Modelo products for the island's market, as well as acts as AB's wholesaler for their CBA domestic products. (Second label - Not sure what the deal is).

As noted on the neck labels, it comes from the Mexico City brewery while Crown/Contellation's comes from their Nava brewery. Neither lists any ingredients - other than Contellation's "slow roasted caramel malts" on the main label - but there's a big difference in ABV. (That could be P.R. excise tax thing).

As you know, many Mexican brewers a half century ago did use rice as their standard adjunct but, if that is still the case, they don't mention it much these days. Funny, after more than a century of AB touting rice as the superior adjunct Constellation uses the vague (and plural) "Non-malted cereals" for all its beers on their websites.

I can't think of another label that uses the term "non-malted" in the ingredient list, but "cereal grains" has been commonly used instead of stating corn and/or rice. Corona Extra itself in the US had long been said to use corn syrup by non-brewery, secondary sources (M. Jackson, for one IIRC).

Anyone else refer to this beer as NegrO Modelo and not NegrA Modelo? Always thought it ended with an O. Total Mandela effect going on right now.

When I was introduced to the beer (yellow label) it was NegrA Modelo, and the 6 pack carriers were yellow. Lately the bottle labels and 6 and 12 pack carriers are black, and name is Modelo NIgra. Don't know what to tell ya, @BruChef .

Mine too, but I've had trouble finding Carta Blanca for years. The only places I've been able to find it is in quart bottles in supermarkets that are in areas with high Latinx populations. I haven't seen a six pack in at least 5-6 years, maybe more.

Why do you insist on spelling it with an 'I'? It has always been Negra and still is. The change in name was from Negra Modelo to Modelo Negra (as mentioned above)

Thanks for the info. Rice is hypoallergenic and corn is hyperallergenic - that is good. Artificial color is unwelcome, but it won't stop me from have another Modelo Negra in a year or so.

It was from Mexico last time I checked at least, as is the Corona Extra. I'd expect them to move production of Corona Extra to Europe before the Modelo. As you say the ingredients might differ for different markets for whatever reason, just as the specs might.

Might be a direct translation from Spanish perhaps. I guess they figure that for most people being able to check the ingredients list for "poison" is enough.

Heineken apparently moved some of their Mexican brands destined for the US market to one of their Netherland's breweries, due to Covid-19 closures in Mexico. (Besides the two below, also the regular Tecate).

But those beer purists who demand the authentic taste of Mexican-brewed Cerveza that can only be brewed south of the (US) border, take heart! Dos Equis Lager Especial Pineapple, Cucumber and Watermelon all come from a Cervecería Cuauhtémoc Moctezuma brewery!

re: Corona Extra's adjunct - corn syrup or rice.

    M. Jackson (late 1980s) and Molson Coors' blog (2020) both claimed Corona uses corn syrup, as did a noted beer expert/governor/wrestler/conspiracy fan. Yet (right), ABInBev's international employment website says "rice" and only rice...
... but it also say "barley, hops, malt...". Huh? What's up with that? Oh, and check out what +30 years of brewing changes - "3 weeks/21 days" goes from being a fault to something to brag about.
(And, Corona is "Krausened"? Never saw that claim, either...)
