Ran out of cedar planks. Didn’t plan ahead. But have some alder. Alder plank salmon coming up.

    And having a beer.

    Surly Furious, canned on 7/14/20

Poured into a tulip this beer has an unusual coppery color with a cake-like beige cap of foam that I would swear has the slightest blush of pink. Decent staying power and it leaves some fluffy lace.

Scent is pineapples, spice, pine, caramel malts and a rich doughy sweetness.

Flavor is... surprisingly subtle. Malty and spicy (is there rye in here?), balanced evenly with citrus (grapefruit), mild tropical fruit notes, pine. Substantial finish. The astringent bitterness of the hops and the creamy sweetness of the malt (I'm getting toffee now and even a hint of something almost sugary) pair so well here. This really doesn't taste Furious at all, nor even mildly annoyed. This beer clearly had a good outcome from anger management training because it is remarkably smooth and elegant. In no way a hop bomb. Satisfying hop flavor and bitterness but it is met with a really rich malt bill such that neither takes the center stage.

Luscious soft velvety mouthfeel. Feels like almost no carbonation and reminds me of a cask ale.

    High drinkability.

    Really a delicious beer.

There is a very subtle sherry vibe to this, with some red grape, cherry and marzipan accents, as well as more distinct apricot, fig and plum notes and more earthy hints of coffee and a light tartness that serve as a great counterpoint to the sweet, caramel malt and wildflower honey notes here.

This was a big must-have for me when I planned a trip to Burlington earlier this year. Of course I had to cancel it so it remains elusive. I have heard so many good things. Enjoy!

Brewing Projekt Blood Orange Resist NEIPA, 6.78% ABV. Pours hazy orange and thick with a two-finger white head that left no lacing. Nose is orange juice, vanilla, and lactose. Taste follows, moderately sweet, slightly bitter like zest. Excellent smooth mouthfeel. Overall world-class. The best beer of theirs I've had.
