People who are buying Westy 12s for trade bait are going to end up seriously disappointed.

Yeah. It doesn't trade for much as is. Good extras to send/receive though.

A few years ago it did, but with more people bringing some back to the states, ebay and the bricks over the last year that is all but dead. It used to be one of the main trade baits for European traders, aside from shelf Cantillon Blabaer and Narke 6 packs.

Belmont Station essentially does this for all of their beers anyway (just not as big of a percentage as here). My impression from the Belmont Station email is that they are quite supportive of this whole thing the monks are doing.

Correct me, but, MSRP is $84.99, can't a shop sell it for whatever it wants?

Yes I know. What struck me as a bit odd, as that they felt the need to explain themselves with their pricing of the Westy 12. I got the impression that they really wished to try to sell the beer as close to the MSRP as possible, but wanted to make it clear that if you used a CC, they wouldn't be able to do that. As you indicated, this is of course their policy with all beer sales (you'll pay a bit more if you use a CC).

No, it's part of the agreement to receive any allocation. Stores must sell it for $85. (I suppose maybe they could sell it for less if they really wanted to take a loss on them.)

Actually, I think the percentage is about 3% on everything. It's just that these are more expensive items than most stuff in the store.

Well, now that's absolutely ridiculous and they won't be getting my money. If true, this amounts to a Belgian brewery just asking hundreds (thousands?) of various size businesses in the U.S. to do them a giant fucking favor.

I guess the "suggested" should be removed from MSRP.

We will likely do the same @ The Hop & Vine, unless we do a cash-only scenario. Either way is a hassle for somebody.

When they were sold in Belgium they set the price at 25€ to prevent sellers from gouging customers on the price. I assume the Monastery is doing the same here, the main difference being that the price has gone up considerably due to shipping costs, taxes and middle men. I would not blame Sint Sixtus for this, it is what it is and I would be surprised if they see more than 20€/brick.

No, it's asking them not to do exactly what everyone predicted would happen when this was first announced, which is rampantly price-gouging. This is a worthwhile read: http://beerpulse.com/2012/12/westvl...more-on-challenges-of-a-one-time-u-s-release/

No one has to "do them a giant fucking favor" as you put it, but context is valuable. The abbey is not a for-profit business. They are a monastery who exists on the basis of charity and the sales of the products they make. Everyone along the line here is making a choice whether or not they wish to support them. Shelton Brothers wasn't forced to import the beer, but chose to. None of the stores were forced to sell it, but chose to. As part of engaging in this charity fundraiser, they are asked not to profit off of it.

It was just an example. My point being that people across the pond are willing to pay a lot for a fine American beer, so it holds true to this side. If memory serves right, I believe Alan once a had a distributor in Denmark years ago. On his old website, for some reason I remember seeing that under the find his beer page and being surprised by that.

You can prevent price gouging and and still make it worthwhile for the retailer. Instead, businesses choosing to sell the product are asked to make a profit of barely over a dollar per sale, and lose money if they choose to use what is the normal transaction method in America, the credit card. Of course the could do what Belmont Station is doing, but has the abbey even approved that?

I think this is an excellent point. I assume it's good PR for the store to carry Westy 12 (at least this first go round), but otherwise, it seems like there's little motivation to participate in this. I'm not exactly sure who is going to be making money off the sale of Westy 12 (other than the Monks), once everyone has been paid to get the beer over here, but it seems pretty clear it won't be the retail outlets. Frankly, I tend to side with GoBigTV7... this sounds like an awful lot of hassle for very little benefit.

Also... I agree that that is stupid. That's why I send him a box of HotD once a year. Shipping is expensive, but on per bottle basis, it works out much better.

I know Point Blank isn't making anything, so assuming that Shelton Brothers didn't take a cut (which is doubtful), the only people making money on this are the monks and the shipping companies that are transporting it across the country.

As for the CC fees, it's regrettable, but less regrettable than giving Visa/Mastercard several hundred dollars on top of selling the sets at wholesale.

Folks who think they'll pull wales, yeah, I think you're right there. (I basically stumbled into 2 separate trades involving Westy 12 and didn't really give up anything outrageous for them.) I'm just an occasional trader who'd probably be looking for cool locals if I do pull the trigger on a brick.

So, how hard will I have to fight for one of these? Are they going to be sitting around for weeks, or do I have to wake up early?

Meh. Got a sixer in a trade so I wasn't blinded by what I traded for it. It is good, but not worth jumping through hoops. Have fun tracking this down kids!

Belmont station is taking pre-orders. You pay the full $85 up front and then you bring in your receipt on the 12th to pick up the beer.

I paid for mine this morning and the guy said that their instructions were to take as many pre-orders as possible. So it's not clear what happens if they somehow end up with more orders than packs, but at least for now I'd say you should just visit Belmont Station this weekend and pre-order for minimal hassle.
