On the topic of how to pick themes for future tastings, let me add something.

Back when I did my dubbel tasting, I simply stated that I wold host a dubbel tasting on a certain date unless there were any objections. I didn't start a discussion to arrive at a theme, I simply picked one. Granted, when I did so, there was no activity on this thread for 4 months... so I wasn't stepping on anyone else's toes. I'm not suggesting that this is how it should be done (circumstances are a bit different here ATM).

Also, not too long ago I made a post here commenting on how past tastings were either style or beer specific, and @FBarber corrected me by pointing out the "beers you inexplicably haven't had" tasting thread - I think which (if my memory isn't horrible) came about from just going with the flow of forum chatter.

This isn't to say that committee decisions, strategic pre-planning, and voting in polls isn't the best way to go - because those methods can be great (and are worth exploring). I just wanted to point out that flexibility and a variety of approaches could be good to keep things interesting. Personally, I wouldn't want to totally lose the ability to accommodate a BeerAdvocate nut who suddenly decided that they'd love to host a tasting thread for beers with twist off caps.

@Todd's article on the FW Brewmaster's Reserve club gave me an idea. While I won't be able to get these releases, there are plenty of others that are widely available. What about a tasting of FW "boxed" beers? Parabola, §ucaba, Old Man Hattan, Helldorado, the Anniversary releases - any style would be fair game. Plus I need a few more FW boxes for a Jenga set. :stuck_out_tongue: Any thoughts?

I also don't understand some of those choices. Stouts, does that mean ANY Stout? Low ABV, high ABV, barrel-aged and not. As long as there's no flavor(s) added? Lumping too many different beers together in this one. Same with Porters. "Chocolate beers"...what the hell does that even mean? So many different styles of beers that contain chocolate and/or cocoa nibs. Does that mean it can be an Imperial Stout with cocoa nibs added? Even though one of the choices is Non-Flavored Stouts. Need to re-do those poll choices.

Sorry all, there were some issues with the poll. I am trying to figure out the best way to handle this and will let you all know. I had to take down the old link. I will get back to you all on this.

The idea of the poll questions was to narrow the focus, with the final details being ironed out once the topic was chosen.

For instance, the stout one was suggested to be any stout that was not barrel aged and contained no flavor additives. ABV was not specified. The idea being a focus on old-school stouts.

The porter was not all that hashed out, but I believe again, focusing more on the traditional examples of the styles (English vs. American, etc)

"Chocolate beers" means chocolate beers ... and yes, so many styles contain chocolate - thats kind of the fun of a tasting with that theme - it could be a golden ale with cocoa nibs ... or an imperial pastry stout with chocolate cake, chocolate syrup, whole candy bars and a shot of insulin ... the only requirement is "chocolate"

Firestone Walker doesn't distribute in every state. And a lot of people don't trade or buy beer online.

Looks like we were able to figure this out! There should be a poll at the top of the thread that you all can vote in.

Are there any commercially available Kötbussers at this point?

Freigeist made one a while ago, but historical styles are kinda their thing. There's certainly nothing that's widely commercially available, the style is pretty much dead in Germany as far as I can tell. Maybe it's more available in East Germany, but I kinda doubt it.

I have a question, since a couple of ways of using a poll were discussed.

Will the poll select THE style, which will then be narrowed by discussion?
Or, with the poll narrow down the styles for discussion?

(Actually, while I am unsure about the above questions, the REAL reason for this post was to bump the thread to try to get more people voting in the poll! :sunglasses: ... Only 5 days left!)

    :+1:
I'm looking at the poll to narrow down the styles to be discussed.
Personally I would prefer to reach an agreement by consensus and discussion rather than enforced majority. This will lead to a more amiable tasting and greater participation.

It'll pick the general topic and then we'll have general discussion on narrowing the sub-styles (especially since the co-leaders are porters and dark lagers, both of which need narrowing in focus), and the date of the tasting.

    Alright - poll closed yesterday.

    Top styles by vote:
    1. Porter
    2. Dark Lagers
    3. Tie: Stouts & Scotch Ale/Wee Heavies
Per that poll, the next tasting will be porters ... time now to narrow down the focus.

Personally, I propose that we focus in on more traditional non-adjuncted/add-junked porters since these are going to be the less common ones. So any English, American, baltic, or smoked porter can be included ... thoughts?

I agree with focusing on traditional porters, no BA, no coffee, no vanilla, no flavoring add-junks.

Does anyone have an issue with Baltic Porters? (Since many of them are actually lagers.)

I don't, personally, have an issue. I just wanted to point that out (or, maybe stir the pot?) :smirk:

Sounds good to me, hopefully I can find some. The porter options have shrunk noticeably in my area this year. It will be a good excuse to revisit two local porters though and see how they are doing
