Eh, I like my beers really cold, except for Stouts. My brother mentioned the same things about Italy, even with regards to hotels and air conditioning. He was in Rome in July and died from the heat. One ice cube in your whatever. No thanks, not in July anyways.

It warms as it sits I’m not a pounder. The warmer the weather gets the colder I like it. When you grow on on AALs and Rolling Rock specifically colder is more like self defense. The warmer they get they get to be undrinkable, so it carries over to craft beers as well. So it’s a habit and a preference.

Can't buy that. I cut my drinking teeth on Old Style and Olympia at towny bars that kept them near 32. As I learned about good beer, I also learned what made them enjoyable. Habit or preference, anyone can change -- especially if it makes an experience that much more enjoyable.

Just me I guess, but I actually like the taste of good beer.

I do to I just like it under 40 degrees. Personal preference trumps general guideline, I might be in the minority, but I’m sure there’s others that like cold beer. Except stouts or porters, they get weird if beyond just cool.

If you live in a hot climate, adjunct lager served near freezing after being active outside tastes wonderful. Sometimes even here in VT after weed whacking in July.

AAL isn't what I'm talking about. I agree that stuff is meant to be served cold, but so many others will just lose all flavor and character when dropped to below 45 degrees -- read the BA page I linked to -- Todd's right when he says too many people drink beer too damned cold.

Funny about hot climates, Guinness Export Stout is a popular beer in many of them. And I doubt it's served ice cold.

Didn't you just tell us you weren't a "pounder?"

There is room for personal preference and I’ve been on here since 2008 and I rarely rate anything anymore, so I don’t care much about that there. Most of my early ratings were horrendous, I was just starting heavy into craft. The deal is my enjoyment, and I like cold beer and you don’t, that’s ok by me. I respect your right to drink what you like anyway you want too, you paid for it, so enjoy. It’s not hard, just like styles, I don’t like sours so,I don’t drink them.

I don't like warm, let alone actual hot, drinks. I drink everything as cold as I can. My palate and sense of smell are subpar, and I never get any of the "flavors that develop as it warms". My friends mock me, and we've gotten into actual arguments at shares over the topic.

I REALLY do not like the body and texture of big, thick beers as they warm. Might as well drink discount "maple syrup" from the shelf at the dollar store.

I’d say my sense of smell is definitely subpar, has been since I was a kid with never ending sinus infections. My palate is really so so too, I’m far from a super taster, so cold works for me. Not just beer, juices, soda, water etc.

I have only reviewed about 50 beers since joining BA 6 months ago. I gave one across the board "5". It was a NEIPA and after reading the technical description of the style combined with my personal conclusion that I could be happy drinking that one beer forever, I gave it "5". I couldn't envision how it could be better. To answer a previously posted question about "what do you do if you find a beer that you like better than one you ranked "5"? the answer is easy....assuming the new beer is the same style, I will go back and revise the "5" review to reflect the fact that I found another beer that is better in one or more attributes.

Yup, that's me, except, it was various sports balls, fists, and random weapons, as opposed to infections.

I'm clumsy, and ornery, a bad combo for the snoot.

IMHO, you give the 2nd beer a 5 too. The second beer being great does not diminish the first beer at all.

My highest rated beer is 4.77, and though I probably rate higher than many/most BA's on average (4.03), I doubt I'd ever rate any beer over 4.75 for look or over 4.5 for feel, so no 5.0 ratings from me.

I try to be very careful with this. Over the years, I've started caring less about IPA freshness (for turbid IPAs), so I'll often find myself rating old ones. My personal philosophy is as follows - I'm willing to review older beer. If I don't find that the age has had any detrimental effect on the beer, I'll review it normally (taking note of the date). If I find that the age has clearly harmed the beer, I will not contribute a rating, as it's not an,accurate reflection of the beer.

I recently opened a 7 month-old IPA that I said I definitely wouldn't rate. It was so damn good, I had to go and review it. Outside factors unrelated to the brewery or the beer (released as intended) should not be factored into ratings. I believe that goes for price too, but that's a controversial one :grinning:

I fully understand your take, though I cannot agree with you regarding Budweiser or most macro AALs scoring a 4.75-5 simply because I think, objectively, they're poorly made beers. Corners are cut to increase yield and profit, and having a real love of lager, I know what it's supposed to be, and the macros just seem watered down and lacking any traditional lager character. I do have a craft AAL that I scored a 4.1, which is an exceptionally high rating. I just think a lager should be designed with flavour in mind, not maximum chuggability.

Now, I do agree with you regarding personal preference affecting rating, and I try to take this into consideration. I have countless examples of beers I didn't love as much as beers I truly went gaga for, but rated higher than them. My take on that is, beer A may be a great take on the style, hits the right marks, but say it's a bit on the sweet side or a bit viscous. I may absolutely love it, but if I then try beer B, which is basically flawless and has everything done beautifully and true-to-style or tradition, I'll likely give that one a slightly higher rating, simply because I think it's a better representation of what the beer is supposed to be.

At the end of the day, I'm not reviewing and rating for me, as much, but rather for other people to use to help them make decisions on what to seek out, just as I did when I first discovered BeerAdvocate. Personal preference will definitely affect most people's ratings, and I think that's 100% fair and understandable. Hell, even I have my moments of bias.
