Consensus seems to be amenable to all porters except Baltic.

We need to pick a weekend for this now - how about March 13/14? or March 27/28?

Either works for me. I perhaps prefer the earlier date, but it is not a strong preference.

Later date works better for me, 20/21 or 27/28.

I expect I'll be tasting mostly "traditional" porters, both English and American styles. It's good to revisit old classics plus try a few new (or new-to-me) "classics" as well.

However, I am looking around for one or two that fall into the flavored/Imperial/barrel-aged categories... just to spice things up a bit. Quite a few of these kinds available, so narrowing it down to just one or two is the challenge.

Alright guys, Porter tasting will be happening on March 12th - 13th. I'll post the planning thread when I have a few minutes free today.

Going back to 2 days? I'm fine with that, just askin'.

Yea, the barleywine was spread out to 3 days mainly due to the high ABV.

That leaves Friday/Saturday for the tasting and doesn't overlap with NBS.

I don't recall if this was already discussed, but given the poll choices, I'm assuming that the intention of the tasting is to not include stouts. If that's the case, it might be worth mentioning this clearly in the planning thread since stouts are porters. With labels like "session stout" and "imperial porter" muddying the waters, you can opt to use ABV as a cutoff rather than how a beer is labeled, but simply going by the name given by the brewer is going to be cleaner. Just giving you food for thought for your thread.

Won't overlap with NBS? Wait, what year is this?

Yea, I think the easiest thing to do here is just use the name given by the brewer ... we can quibble with whether they're correct, but for the purposes of what flies and what doesn't, I think that is the easiest way to do it.

On a side note, I thought of you yesterday as I picked up a bottle of Old Engine Oil for this tasting. Looking forward to that one.

Your side note is funnily relevant because the brewery is currently calling that beer a stout rather than a porter. :astonished:

Does yours just say "black ale?" If it was up to me, I'd say that if a brewer or importer called a particular beer a "porter" at any point in time, then it qualifies for the thread.

BTW - This goes back many years, but the first time I ever did a side-by-side porter tasting, that beer was my favorite of the bunch. I don't buy it anymore though (partially due to price). Now I'm wishing I had one for the thread. If I go shopping again before the 12th (which isn't likely), I'll try to get one.

Yup, It says "black ale". haha, I've always heard it referred to as an English Porter, but idk ...
It was $3.99, but I've never had it before so it was worth it to pick up for the tasting.

Well I don't think I'll be able to swing those dates but I'll pick up some porters in solidarity and optimism anyway!
