Sounds like its the nitro stout with coffee flavoring added ... my local shop had a ton of it in stock - I guess Guinness is pushing it this year.

Just saw a mountain of this at Kroger yesterday. Passed on it, but may grab some on a future grocery trip.

Well, it's a lower ABV and, based on TTB's labeling requirement in Ruling 2015-1 (below) , there must be some coffee in there, too, as well as "natural coffee flavors".
Funny thing about the prominent "ALC. 4% VOL" note - they still don't put the ABV on the cans of 4.2% Guinness Draught (it's voluntary in most of the US states) - so why do it on this one if one can't compare?

Also, I like the nutritional labeling, which is on all the different Guinness stouts labels and is based on 12 oz. as the "Serving Size" - "So what do I do with the other 2.9 ounces?"

They also have a 19.2 oz. can (1.5 servings) of Guinness Extra Stout sans nitro, brewed in Ireland, coming. Think it's been a while since the US has seen ES in cans?

Sans nitro -- means without nitro. ES is probably better that way.

I love the Starbucks nitro black coffee cans. But they are expensive. If I can get Guinness that’s similar I will buy it.

I don't reckon that I have ever had the Extra Stout ON nitro...

I've never seen ES on draft, even in Dublin, let alone on nitro.

I wish I did see it on draught but never ever....on Nitro. I previously said that O'Hara's was my favourite Irish Stout but it comes and goes. ES seems to be always available, knock on wood, and is just as big a favourite of mine.

Truth be told, I probably drink more Guinness per year than any other beer. I'll definitely give this a try.

Yeah (and sorry I mentioned it... :grimacing:) I only noted that the cans of Extra Stout weren't nitrogenized* because some folks might automatically assume "GUINNESS CAN = NITROGEN" - luckily, the folks at Diageo skipped that artificial process for the ES.

*EDIT - excuse me. Apparently the correct term is "Nitrogenated".
The US used to get Guinness Extra Stout in kegs, back when it was brewed here at their short-lived Long Island City brewery. I mean, that's so long ago, I can barely remember it, though

We also got kegged FES (above right) in more recent times, or at least they had a TTB approved label for it. Never saw it myself... (at 7.5%, would be a pretty troublesome draft choice in a lot of places :astonished:).

Probably no worse than the Goose Island "seasonal" I blindly asked for a couple years ago.

Bourbon County. In a pint glass. :grimacing:

It was late in the "season" and I didn't think anyone would still even have BC. I saw them pour it from across the bar room and could smell the bourbon about 6 feet away.

Yeah, only one beer that night.

Yeah, a buddy and I stopped into a local place one sleepy afternoon and for my second beer I ordered a Victory Home Grown (4.8%). The bartender disappeared after serving us, and I was surprised at the appearance of the beer, tasted it and "Whoa, this stuff went bad! Where'd that guy go..."

Took another sip. "Wait a minute, I bet this is Victory Golden Monkey (9.5%)." Bartender shows up again, I mention it, he doubts I'm right, but it's slow, so he goes downstairs and checks.

    "Yup, that's Golden Monkey..."

Yeah, but it's 1pm, I really didn't want to drink a 9.5% beer for my second beer after lunch and with a 30 mile drive home.

Don'cha love that? No way the guy who's drinking his favorite beer can be right.

OTOH -- I've had good and bad results from the same sort of experience.

A buddy and I were drinking Spaten Helles at a spot when the keg blew, tender went down and changed it out to pour us two more -- beer was obviously darker and we both said, "Hey -- that's the Oktoberfest!" (again, late in the season)

Tender says, "Oh, sorry -- you want something else?" "NOOo..."

    Back to topic...

Yeah, my favorite was stopping into a local place that used to carry a constantly rotating series of beers from Brooklyn, called something like Brewmasters Reserved, and the tap handle only said that. Some bartenders knew what beer was on that tap, others didn't. A few days earlier I'd been enjoying Brooklyn Keller Helles served from that tap and asked for it again. The bartender didn't understand what I wanted and I pointed to the Brewmasters Reserves tap. I was served something that sure didn't look or taste like the beer I'd had days earlier. I asked her if it was the same beer. So, she asked the other bartender:
"Hey, is this tap still that Helen Keller Beer?"

At a local restaurant that gets a nice selection of craft beer but whose staff is decidedly not a uh, a wealth of knowledge about craft beer, I once ordered a stout and got a pint of Dogfish head World Wide Stout ... yea, a 16 oz pint glass filled to the brim. It was like 17% or something ... and only $12 :astonished::flushed: Pretty sure it was supposed to be one of the small snifters, but the bartender just threw it in a pint glass ...

I can't remember what I paid for that BC, but I don't think it was the "market price."

Small town, locals' tavern that just happens to have a good tap list (and yeah, bar tenders who only know how to work the tap handle). And mine was topped-off too. Probably the slowest first-beer-of-the-night I've ever drunk.

Oh yeah, and I think they have Guinness on tap too... (keeping to the OP... :flushed:)

    Save that serving for later?

Oh come on man, it's probably just slightly more alcohol than a liter at Oktoberfest. You can do that!

Probably about 15 years ago a local bar just opened, and they had a whole bunch of craft beer on tap. Decent tap list for that time too.

None of the bartenders were made aware of he different alcohol percentages for craft beer. A guy came in and then disappeared for a long period of time after going to the bathroom. They found him passed out in a stall.

Apparently the bartender had served him 8 pints of Golden Monkey, having no idea what the ABV was. I'm fairly certain that bartender was fired, and then the waitstaff had to be taught how to serve different beers with different ABVs.
